The TARDIS learned to translate concepts, not words, because English was a strange little language...

"It's a bit of a dress," Rose eyed her companions with something akin to pity, "you know, the flowing bit everyone steps on unless it's carried by small children."

"Not even close," Jack grinned. "It's engines and freight cars, whistles and smoke-- unless you've gone electric, but what's the fun in that?"

"It's the light of a wishing star, the entropic death of comets." The Doctor was brooding again.

So she threw a pillow at him... and their foray into linguistic scrabble devolved from there.

He was going to live forever. Until the oceans boiled and the stars burnt out. Until Utopia, and maybe beyond. Unless something happened, Jack Harkness would outlive time itself; left standing alone at the edge of existence...

And some days he hated Rose, just a little. Hated the TARDIS and the Doctor. Hated time itself for letting them do whatever they'd done, ripping him loose from death-- making him wrong.

Then in the next breath, loved them again. Because 'forever' was full of life, even to the very end, and he had plenty of time to learn how to die.

It's one thing to be born a wizard in a wizarding family, quite another to have muggle parents and a muggle world. --only fairy tales-- Most children stumbled from one existence to another, stepping from wading pools into deepwater tides, but not Hermione. She knew --folk tales-- just how much her world was changing. --legends--

Out of place, out of depth, she read to stay afloat. --just myths-- Soaking it in, hording every scrap of information, every drop of knowledge, determined to protect her family, her friends.

Because she knew what was waiting in the dark...

It's the what-ifs that snare him, creeping into those empty hours when most of the city sleeps.

He’d have been okay, he thinks, in another universe. One where quantum mirrors and glitches in stargate mechanics didn't make what-ifs into something more than a fairytales. Where you couldn’t change the past and that's a good thing, because sometimes the almosts that didn't happen are so much worse.

But he isn't, he's here. And some nights he can't close his eyes, because every time he does he dreams of what might have been... and knows that somewhere, somewhen, it actually happened.

WARNINGS/SPOILERS: None
SUMMARY: "Second star to the right and straight on till morning." That, Peter had told Wendy, was the way to the Neverland; but even birds, carrying maps and consulting them at windy corners, could not have sighted it with these instructions. Peter, you see, just said anything that came into his head. -- Peter Pan. Written for [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic Must Be Dreaming challenge.

It's never 'just dreams' to a medical board, even when night terrors are par for the course in Atlantis. Declaring someone fit for duty isn't a responsibility the SGC takes lightly; too many lives depend upon that designation.

The returnees argue that everyone has nightmares, heck, in Pegasus they even have nightmares about having nightmares. --not 'just' a vase of flowers, the smell-- It's normal, accepted, a minor stumbling point that everyone has learned to deal with. After all, they still manage to save the world and that's what counts. --how can you not hear that--

The SGC's well acquainted with the kind of damage a universe can bestow --he was acting suspicious, I had to be sure--, and still they don't realize how badly Atlantis is broken. --I left it right here, I must have-- Not until medical teams on the near side of the gate start dealing with the city's refugees. --wasn't a shadow, now check the damned sensor agai--

They seem so normal --second star to the right-- but somewhere along the way --every breath, every heartbeat, everything you see and everything you can't see; all of it can kill you-- Atlantis has forgotten where nightmares begin and end. --want me to think it was just a dream--

It's the central lie in Peter Pan, that Lost Boys can come home again.

--spent too long in Neverland--

It wasn't a question, hadn't been one for years, but every time he woke back from the darkness, he thought-- I'm not dead yet?

Because there was no time in the cold, just overwhelming darkness; flashes of nothing that splintered his life into slivers of light.

The faces were never the same, but he'd learned not to let them explain. Too much time, too much life, was lost to the nothing. He let them run their tests and trials, and went back into the darkness carrying empty promises of 'next time' and 'almost'.

And his last thought, every time, was--

Captain Jack Harkness was the kind of person who could say 'To infinity and beyond!' not only with a straight face, but with an unwavering faith that made you stop and wonder if maybe he wasn't kidding after all.

There were days, back when 'Torchwood' meant 'Torchwood One', and not the Hub, that his devotion had been more worrisome than encouraging. There were believers and then there were believers, and no one was quite sure where Jack's fervor stood. But now, when Torchwood was a shadowed memory of itself, his fire was what kept them going.

To infinity, and beyond.

It had stopped hurting, but he couldn't remember when. He'd lost all sense of time, deep in the heart of the glacial fissure. There was no sunlight --save for the shifting shadows that tinted the ice above him-- but he thought it might still be day. He'd fallen so very long ago. Long in terms of heartbeats, breath, thought... his watch arm is twisted beneath him and he has no sense of hours.

There had been static from the radio, broken with what might have been voices, but that had been when he could still feel his legs. All he has now is breath, and heartbeat, and hope. He could count down Pi in rhythm with his heart, or count up primes, or hold one-sided conversations with the dark... But he's done all those, or he thinks he has, and now there's just the silence of the ice. So he stops counting.

He dreams of flying, soaring over the vast white plains of snow and ice, gliding on the creaks and moans and shuddering snaps as the glacier dies around him.

It takes them two days to find him, thirty-nine hours of increasing panic and decreasing hope. But they don't stop looking, Rodney won't let them stop looking, and finally John comes home. Two days in the ice is two months in recovery, but he comes back hale and whole and that's more than anyone had dared to hope for.

And they never tell him how long he was down in the ice. Rodney's buried the records and blackmailed the staff, and they let him... because John's sure, with a faith that they can't bear to break, that it was only heartbeats.
