It wasn't real.

Simulations, even ones this good, are obvious once you knew where to look and Rodney's been through more than he's comfortable admitting, even to himself. All of this, the ambush, the interrogations, the torture-- everything since they landed was just ones and zeros. Electronic ghosts that played on his nightmares.

He watched his friends suffering, dying, knowing that in the real world he would have lost them. It's almost too much, it always is, but they weren't real… and that's why he can save them.

Rodney finally gets his fingers into code and rips the world apart.

There's nothing he can say to prove he's not who they think he is. He's tried politely, with increasing panic through each interrogation. There are too many coincidences, too many correlations between his truth and their myth for rational explanations.

But that doesn't make it true… right?

They want him to be their John, need him to be with such frantic faith that for one brief moment he's wishing with them.

He leaves that out of the mission reports. And therapy sessions. And fireside chats with friends who won't-- can't understand.

Because he's not sure he isn't their John anymore...

SUMMARY: Written for [community profile] fffc  challenge Little Special: Quick Creation Game (three sentence challenge, prompt: demon).

In his nightmares the chevrons are demon dogs, with cold blue eyes, deep silver fur, and a touch that turns everything to ice. They stalk the edges of his pleasant dreams with the shadows of deeper terrors pooling at their heels, waiting for their chance to strike.

In the waking world he watches them out of the corner of his eye -- he can't look and he can't look away -- each time as they sink their teeth into the gate symbols and tear the universe apart.

Gate Team 5 stared at the towel racks for a long thoughtful moment, abandoned by their native guide who had not quite ditched them in the middle of an alien jungle. An alien jungle that apparently knew how to accessorize.

"What do you suppose he meant by 'explosive growth'?"

Several fun-filled hours later they mastered the art of telling dead-and-thus-safely-inert seedpods from attractively-packaged-leafy-green-bundles-of-death. Actually, Matt had mastered the art of setting-off-explosions-from-a-distance-with-inappropriate-amounts-of-amusement, and Amy was working on poking-things-with-a-very-long-stick, in the hopes of securing a pinecone containing screws and not squirrels. Or whatever they were calling the bright orange rodents with a taste for metal and a nasty possessive streak. (Gate Team 5 had learned to stop suggesting names for wildlife in their mission reports, it just made Sam sigh heavily and pull out her red pen.)

It's the what-ifs that snare him, creeping into those empty hours when most of the city sleeps.

He’d have been okay, he thinks, in another universe. One where quantum mirrors and glitches in stargate mechanics didn't make what-ifs into something more than a fairytales. Where you couldn’t change the past and that's a good thing, because sometimes the almosts that didn't happen are so much worse.

But he isn't, he's here. And some nights he can't close his eyes, because every time he does he dreams of what might have been... and knows that somewhere, somewhen, it actually happened.

TITLE: Till Morning
FANDOM: Stargate Atlantis
LENGTH/RATING: 230 words, PG, Gen
WARNINGS/SPOILERS: None
SUMMARY: "Second star to the right and straight on till morning." That, Peter had told Wendy, was the way to the Neverland; but even birds, carrying maps and consulting them at windy corners, could not have sighted it with these instructions. Peter, you see, just said anything that came into his head. -- Peter Pan. Written for [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic Must Be Dreaming challenge.

It's never 'just dreams' to a medical board, even when night terrors are par for the course in Atlantis. Declaring someone fit for duty isn't a responsibility the SGC takes lightly; too many lives depend upon that designation.

The returnees argue that everyone has nightmares, heck, in Pegasus they even have nightmares about having nightmares. --not 'just' a vase of flowers, the smell-- It's normal, accepted, a minor stumbling point that everyone has learned to deal with. After all, they still manage to save the world and that's what counts. --how can you not hear that--

The SGC's well acquainted with the kind of damage a universe can bestow --he was acting suspicious, I had to be sure--, and still they don't realize how badly Atlantis is broken. --I left it right here, I must have-- Not until medical teams on the near side of the gate start dealing with the city's refugees. --wasn't a shadow, now check the damned sensor agai--

They seem so normal --second star to the right-- but somewhere along the way --every breath, every heartbeat, everything you see and everything you can't see; all of it can kill you-- Atlantis has forgotten where nightmares begin and end. --want me to think it was just a dream--

It's the central lie in Peter Pan, that Lost Boys can come home again.

--spent too long in Neverland--

It wasn't a question, hadn't been one for years, but every time he woke back from the darkness, he thought-- I'm not dead yet?

Because there was no time in the cold, just overwhelming darkness; flashes of nothing that splintered his life into slivers of light.

The faces were never the same, but he'd learned not to let them explain. Too much time, too much life, was lost to the nothing. He let them run their tests and trials, and went back into the darkness carrying empty promises of 'next time' and 'almost'.

And his last thought, every time, was--

"Oh not again."

Their local guide looked over at Rodney in alarm, "What do you mean 'again'?"

"This always happens," Rodney gestured angrily at the cave-in that had sealed off the glacial crevice in front of them, "Every time, without fail--"

"Well, there was that one time--" John cut in.

"What? When?"

"The planet with the sparkly-- things," John waved a hand vaguely, "you know, the one with the trees?"

"Didn't you get kidnapped on that one?" Ronon was checking the icefall for handholds and the guide could have sworn the runner had been out of earshot.

"By /kindergardeners/," John sniffed, "doesn't count if I can't fight back."
