Episode 6 : Shades of Grey
_____________________________________________________________________

"Why not?"

Xavier smiled."Because it was a hologram to start with..."

**********

"You mean I just made it? Out of thin air?" Daniel asked,
looking over at Xavier. "But I've never had a ferret before, I've
only seen them, so how could I have made this? I wouldn't know what I
was doing!"

"It seems not," Xavier commented as the ferret started to purr.
"Since it seems to be acting like a cat." The ferret shot the
Professor a nasty look, and chittered. "But as you can see," Xavier
continued, "you have succeeded in transforming a hologram into
reality. So if you would now change it back..."

**********

Tyger curled up on the floor of his room. He had turned off the
lights, and basked in the near-darkness. He had tried to reach Sasha
twice more the night before, but she refused to respond.

:Kendor soln, kendar kototh.: He rumbled unhappily. :Sometimes
I wish Sasha had been a little more blood-thirsty.:
Tyger shut his
eyes and attempted to reach her yet again. :SASHA!: He yelled. :YOU
CAN'T IGNORE ME FOREVER! You'd die of old age first...:
The response
was far from faint.

:Right. You want to try that again?: Sasha's sarcastic
mindvoice ripped into him, and Tyger smiled.

:Gotcha.:

:Alright, what do you want?:

:Where is Pace?:

:You know I can't tell you that.: Sasha replied quietly. :You
know the rules.:

:You _made_ the rules!: Tyger objected.

:You'll have to find him yourself Tyger.: Sasha said, and broke
the mindlink. Tyger scowled into the darkness, and then sighed.

:It's worth a try.: He finally decided, :But so is playing
Lotto...:

**********

"Chere," Remy asked, leaning up against the wall of the rec
room, "D'you trus' de tiger?"

"What d'ya mean?" Rogue asked, flicking the TV off, and turning
to face him.

"Dat one be throwin' us bits 'o de truth, and hopin' we tink
it's de whole pie, ne?"

Rogue shrugged. "Ah don't know, but..."

"But what, chere?"

"Some things jus' don't match, ya know? But Daniel's such a nice
kid, ah don't know..."

Gambit looked pensive for a moment. "I wonder if petite _does_
know."

"Now ya lost me, shugar."

Gambit straightened. "Dat one don' act like she' fancin' death
in de face, an' dat be what de Klnir is, ne?" He shrugged. "I
beginin' ta tink she be flyin' blind."

**********

"I don't think so." Daniel replied, shocked. "You want me to
turn this poor thing back into a hologram?" She sliced her hand
through the air. "Nope, nyet, never, no way."

Xavier gave up, if he had learned anything from Jubilee it was
never argue with a teenager. "So what were you planning on feeding
it? Cat food?" Daniel gave him a stony look, and the Professor
decided that digression might be the better part of valor. "Perhaps
now might be a good time to break for breakfast." he suggested.

"If I don't have to turn it into a hologram," Daniel countered,
"and if you tell me what happened to the X-men."

Xavier looked at her curiously. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, what happened to Jean Grey? Where's Betsy? And Warren,
and all the other X-men."

"I will assume you are talking about Warren Worthington the
third," Xavier answered, "and I can think of nothing that would make
that playboy turn hero." He shrugged, "Of Betsy I have no idea, I
have yet to run into a mutant with that name."

"What about Jean?" asked as they moved towards the Danger Room
door.

"Jean was a perfect example of why you don't have one female in
an all male group." Xavier replied regretfully.

"What?" Daniel stopped. "You mean she dropped out?" Xavier
nodded. "But that's impossible!"

"Thank you for that relevation," Xavier replied dryly, "but I
somehow think that it is indeed possible."

"Sorry," Daniel apologized, "but the Jean in the comic books was
the Phoenix, married Scott, and was an X-man from the very beginning!"
She shook her head, and resumed walking. "I mean, it couldn't have
been _that_ bad, well... maybe. Bobby _was_ a pain..."

"Bobby?"

"This is going to take a while..."

**********

An hour and a half later Daniel scrounged her first meal of the
day, and headed for the TV and hopefully, a MST3K episode...

Daniel wandered into the rec room armed with a bowl of cherioes,
a two-liter bottle of Diet Coke, and a ferret who was busy munching
on beef jerky. Remy and Rogue looked up, and their conversation
retired to an early grave.

"What's up?" Daniel asked, as she claimed the TV. Rogue looked
uncomfortable. "Rogue?" Daniel hit mute, deposited `breakfast' onto
a nearby table and turned to face the X-man. "Whatsa matter?

"How much d'you know 'bout Tyger?"

Daniel looked confused. "Tyger? Um... I'da know, a lot I guess.
I mean he's been around since I was born, I think anyway." Daniel
shrugged. "The first time I saw him was in the Danger Room, but I
always thought he was around, back home I mean." She looked at Rogue
suspiciously. "Why?"

"'Cause I tink we know sumptin' you don', petite." Remy
answered. "An' I'm wonderin' why you don' know."

"So tell me."

**********

Tyger lay quietly in the dark room, his thoughts winging into
the silence. :Pace, where are you? Pace...: He tried to remember the
image, he had pulled from Remy's mind, of the slate grey wolf. :Pace,
can you hear me?:
Pace should have been able to hear him. :I will not
Judge!:
Tyger thought hopelessly, :I _won't_ Judge, Pace...:

A faint answering voice echoed back through Tyger's mind. :You
cannot help but Judge.:

:Pace!: Tyger thought relieved. :Where...: but his thoughts
were interrupted as Daniel stormed into the room, the ferret hanging
on for dear life.

She stopped two feet in the door and glared at Tyger. "How could
you?" She demanded.

**********

Sasha sat, staring out across the peaceful valley, soon to be
filled with Dreamer-Dancer pairs.

:Sahsa?: Her Dreamer intruded into her thoughts quietly. :Why
are you so positive Pace still lives?:

Sasha sighed. :Because I have been talking to him these past few
years.:

Her Dreamer looked shocked. :Sasha! Why didn't you tell anyone,
why didn't you tell _me_?:
he asked. :Pace was my friend.:

:How _could_ I tell you?: She countered. :Chess is dead, he's
trapped alone in that reality, and by the Gods, if anyone else had
found out he'd be _dead_!:

Her Chosen stepped back as she rose. :I wouldn't have,: he
answered quietly, :if you know anything about me you know that.:

She sighed. :How many decades has it been Toby? How many
centuries, how many millenniums, how many _eons_?:

:Whose planet are we counting by?:

Sasha laughed, the hissing roar echoing in the quiet valley.
:I've always said humans make the best Chosen.: She noted smugly. :If
all else fails, they know how to make you laugh.:

:So that's all I'm good for?: Toby countered teasingly.

:Oh Gods, love,: Sasha answered, curling her head down to gaze
at him, :don't ever leave me.:

**********

"I trusted you." Daniel snapped. "I believed everything you
said, and what's it got me?" She gestured angrily at the ferret.
"I'm trapped in some stupid `War of the Worlds' and my side won't
even tell me what's going on." She turned her back on the tiger.
"I won't do it. Go pick someone else to play with, and leave me
alone!" She bolted from the room, leaving Tyger shocked and silent.

:Daniel?: but she had blocked the mindlink, and for the first
time in his life, Tyger was alone.

EPISODE 5 : Mind Over Matter
----------------------------

"Gambit?" She asked sleepily. Remy looked at Rogue, and then
back at Daniel and shook his head.

"Sorry petite, I t'ink you got me confused wi'd somebody else."

**********

Daniel was beginning to regret waking up.

"You're not Gambit?"

"Non, My name is Remy LeBeau." He replied, a little mystified.
Daniel looked at him, half-asleep and half-annoyed.

"Yes, but your name is Gambit." Rogue realized this conversation
was probably going to keep repeating if she didn't so something.

"'Ah think we have 'stablished that it's not, shugar." She
interjected. "So there ain't much point in bringin' it up again."
Daniel sighed.

:How can Remy not be Gambit?: She grumbled. :He obviously still
knows Rogue...:

"Alright, so you're not Gambit." Daniel finally admitted. "But
then why are you here? Are you an X-man?" Remy smiled bitterly.

"Not for lack 'o tryin', petite. An' as for why I'm here.." He
glanced at Rogue. "Dat be a personal matter, ne?"

**********

::...which is what happened when the Knlir arrived in this
reality.::
Tyger finished.

"You coulda said something." Jubilee pointed out. "'Stead of
freakin' out the rest of us, how was I 'suposed to know you weren't
gonna hurt the Prof?"

::I'll assume that was an apology:: Tyger answered.

"I think _not_."

:Jubilee.: Xavier chided. :While I appreciate your attempt to
protect me, now would _not_ be a good time to press your luck.:
The
teenager shot him a rebellious look, but backed down.

"Do you know where the Knlir landed?" Beast asked, steering the
conversation back on track. Tyger shook his head.

::On this planet, that at least I know, but otherwise...:: The
cat flicked his ears back. ::But he will be here soon enough.::

"Cannot you simply relocate to a different reality?"

::Not until Daniel masters her powers.:: Tyger answered the
be-furred scientist. ::And that will not be soon enough.::

"You can't just drag her with you?" Jubilee jumped back into the
conversation.

::No.::

"Then it looks like we had better get moving" Beast noted, "Or
we may find ourselves woefully unprepared."

**********

:I'd better find out what else is wrong with this place, before
I really screw things up.:
Daniel realized. :If this is like Age of
Apocalypse, the good guys may not be good guys...:

"So who else isn't an X-man?" She asked. Rogue and Remy gave her
odd looks. "I mean, is everyone else still the same?" This was not
quite going the way she had planned. To make things worse, the little
voice was back again. She squashed it with a mental slap, and
attempted to ask the question again... "Who _are_ X-men?"

"Me, Storm, Xavier, Logan, Chamber, Cyclops, Beast, an'
Jubilee." Rogue answered.

:Chamber? He's in Gen X...: Daniel was now very confused. :And
what happened to Jean? and Bishop? an..:
She collected her thoughts
and gave herself a mental shake. :This sure isn't a comic book.:

**********

::While I would like to assist in Daniel training,:: Tyger added,
while the foursome made their way towards the medlab, ::certain
factors make that impossible.::

"I understand completely," Xavier answered, "however I do hope
that you will aide me as much as possible..."

::Of course.:: Tyger answered, and then cocked his head as the
tiny voice whispered whiningly at him. :She's getting better.: He
noted to himself, and released the voice back into the astral plain.
He notice Beast giving him a questioning look. ::My Chosen is no
longer asleep.::
He answered.

**********

"Where's Bishop?" Daniel got blank looks. "Okay...how 'bout
Jean?...Archangel?...Psylocke?..." Now she was getting worried. "So
you've never heard of these guys? No Jean Grey? No Warrengton III, no
Betsy?"

"'Ah know Jean, an' there's someone named Angel, but Ah've
never heard of Bishop, Betsy or Psylocke." Rogue answered.

"How about Cable? Cannonball? Rahnee? um... X-factor?
X-calaber?" She searched her mind for names. "Banshee? Skin? Mondo?
Colossus? Paige? Kitty Pryde? Forge?" She trailed off as she realized
Remy was staring at her. "What?"

"Dat be an 'pressive list 'o names, petite. An' I heard 'o some
'o dem. But they never been X-men."

**********

::This is interesting:: Tyger noted as they got close to the
medlab, ::I had thought Gambit was not an X-man.:: The comment drew
blank looks from his companions. ::Remy LeBeau.:: He clarified, and
was mystified at the Professor's suddenly icy glare.

"No," Xavier replied softly. "He is not an X-man."

:Umm.. Kitling: Tyger called to his Chosen :You may want to take
cover...:

**********

Daniel looked confused, and then turned to look at Remy.

"Why would Xavier be mad at you?" The question, of course, threw
the cajun a little off-balance.

"Umm...well petite.." he attempted to answer, but stopped as
Xavier and crew entered the medlab.

"No, Remy, why don't you answer the child." Xavier snapped. "I'm
sure she would like to know." Daniel looked from Remy to the Prof,
and then relaxed slightly as Tyger moved to her side.

"He don' seem ta trus' me petite." Remy smiled nastily, "Wonder
why." Rogue laid a hand on his shoulder.

"There was a trainin' `accident' an' somebody got hurt, they
seem 't think Remy did it." Xavier frowned.

"We do not think Rogue, we know. Why else would he refuse to
let me mindscan him? He was the only other one in the Danger Room at
that time, and we all have seen the effects of his temper." The
Professor looked pointedly at the card half-way out of Remy's sleeve
and glowing.

"I can think of half-a-dozen." Daniel interrupted. "I mean, you
want to go rummaging around in his head? Why can't you just _ask_ him
what happened?"

"Because he don' trus' me petite." Remy answered. "An' I ain't
lettin' dat one in my head, not for all de world."

::Would you let me?:: Tyger asked quietly. Everyone looked at the
tiger, and then at Remy. :It can't be any worse than what's in the
comics.:
Tyger added. Remy looked at Rogue, then at Xavier.

"Hey, dat's fine wi' me." He glanced over at the tiger, "But you
don' go prying' ne?" Tyger looked at Xavier. The Professor shrugged.

"As long as you will tell me the truth..." Tyger turned and
walked out of the room followed by Remy.

::While I'm talking to Remy, why don't the rest of you give up
and go to sleep. It's after midnight.::

"But I just woke up!" Daniel complained. :Plus I wanna know
what the story is with Gambit.:

:His name's Remy.: Daniel sighed, and then turned to look at
Xavier.

"So, am I sleeping in the medlab or what?"

**********

Tyger found an empty room and moved into it, mentally 'blinding'
the surveillance equipment. He turned and looked back at Remy.

::I don't bite.:: Remy shrugged.

"It don' pay 't be careless." Tyger nodded.

::Would you like to sit down?:: Remy walked over to a chair.

"Jus' don' get 'tween me and de door, ne?" Tyger sidestepped so
he was out of the way. Remy sat, swinging the chair around backwards.

::So what happened?:: Remy looked a little startled.

"Ain't you gonna read me?" He asked confused. Tyger shook his
head.

::I can tell when your lying, that should suffice.:: He gave Remy
a friendly look, ::After all, everyone needs a few secrets.:: Remy
relaxed and leaned his arms on the chair's back.

"Dis was.. seven years ago I tink, back when I firs' met Rogue."
Remy drifted off into yesteryear. "Now dat be a woman, ne?" He chuckled
"She didn' tink I was so wonderful myself, not wi' Chess there." Remy
frowned. "'Course I didn' like de tadpole, who would? He didn' fight
fair, couldn' hit 'im on my best day. Had somtin' dat let 'im see what
someone was gonna do, 'for they did it." he shrugged. "But I didn'
kill 'im, he jus' vanished."

::He vanished?:: Remy nodded.

"I was in de Danger Room, been workin' out when he comes in an'
asks me to hide 'im." Remy frowned. "He looked like sometin' been
chasin' 'im or some-such. But 'fore I could _anythin'_ he up and
vanished. Odd, ne?" Tyger nodded, and then looked at Remy closely.

::Would you let me try something?:: Remy looked a little nervous.

"What?"

::I think someone has blocked some of your memories, I would like
to remove the block.::
Remy shuddered.

"Dey been in my head? Jus' as long as you don' look at nothin'
else.." Tyger nodded.

::This should only take a moment.:: Tyger brushed past Remy's
instinctive mindshield, and headed towards the Danger Room episode. As
he had suspected barriers blocked his way. He snarled as he tore them
down, and found what he had feared on the other side. ::Knlir.::

Remy gasped as Tyger removed the barriers that stood between him
and the day's events. "Mon deau." He cursed very quietly. "Chess...What
_is_ dat thin'?" He asked Tyger.

::That is a Knlir in it's true form, and that _was_ the missing
Dreamer pair, Jason and Pace.::
Tyger bowed his head. ::Fear not cajun
you did not kill Chess, _we_ did.::
Remy looked at the grief-stricken
cat.

"You?" Nothing Rogue had told him accounted for the Knlir, or the
tiger's grief. "Dat was a wolf, ne? An' you sayin' you're related?"
Tyger curled up on the floor.

::Pace was a Dancer, he should have known.:: Remy just looked at
the tiger.

"I tink I'm missin' sometin' important here, ne?" Tyger turned
his head to look at him.

::Go talk to Xavier.:: Remy backed out of the room.

"Sure, whatever you say. I be goin' now, bye." Remy hurried to
rejoin Rogue and Xavier, the other X-men having succumb to the tiny
voice that was encouraging sleep.

:Sasha: Tyger called mournfully into the deep. :I have found the
Dancer. Sasha....:
After a moment a voice answered him.

:We will sing for the Dreamer, but the Dancer still lives.:
Tyger looked up in shock.

:He cannot! How?: The other voice declined to answer. Tyger stood
and glanced out the window into the starry sky. :Then he is still here,
without a Dreamer...:
He trailed off. :His Chosen is dead, he should
be too.:
He shook his head. :Ah well, back to reality..: He smiled and
then moved out the door after Remy.

**********

:Kitling wake up.: Tyger nosed the comatose/sleeping Daniel. She
grumbled and rolled away from his cold, damp nose. He sighed. :Kitling
you do not have a choice.:
Daniel opened one eye.

:It's eight in the morning cat.: Tyger looked at her expectantly.

:And...?: Daniel glared at him.

:And it is way _way_ too early for me to be alive.: She burrowed
under the covers. :Wake me when it's Spring.: Tyger paused a moment and
then nudged her again.

:It _is_ Spring Kitling, and the Professor is waiting for you in
the Danger Room.:

:Lucky me.: Tyger reached in and picked Daniel up by her t-shirt.
"Hey!" He dumped her on the floor.

:You act like a kitten, I'll treat you like one.: Daniel glared
at him for a moment and then attempted to find the rest of her clothes.

:To err is human... to forgive _feline_.:

**********

"Alright," Xavier began, "if you would please retrieve the apple
from the table, we shall begin your training." Daniel nabbed the fruit
and then looked over at the Professor.

"What am I supposed to do with it?"

"Turn it into a hologram." Daniel glanced from the apple to
Xavier.

"I can do that?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"If you can convince yourself that it is a hologram, then in
this reality, it will be." Daniel looked down at the apple.

:Alright, you can see and hear a hologram, but you can't smell
it or feel it, or taste it.:
She sighed. :Right. So taste isn't
gonna be too much of a problem, I hope. But not feel it? I'm
_holding_ the stupid thing.:
She closed her eyes. :Okay, so I
pretend I'm not holding it, that there's some projector somewhere
and...:

After a few minuets of unsuccessful trying she opened her eyes
and glared at Xavier.

"This doesn't work." She gestured with the uncooperative fruit.
"Maybe Tyger's wrong.. maybe I can't do this!" She glared at the
apple and then threw it at one of the walls. It made a satisfying
splat. Xavier sighed.

"You cannot expect to pick these things up on the first try
Daniel, this requires time and patients..."

"And I'm running out of both!" She snapped. Xavier motioned
towards the table.

"Try something different then...like the ferret." The animal
was pacing in a small cage. It looked up and chittered as she moved
over. Daniel looked at it for a moment, and then lifted it out of
the cage. It scrambled up her arm and curled around her shoulders.
Daniel moved back over to Xavier.

"Are you sure I should do this?" She asked a little nervously
"I mean, what if I do turn it into a hologram and can't turn it
back!" She scritched the ferret's red-brown head. "Wouldn't that
kill it?" Xavier shook his head.

"No, at least not theoretically, but in this case I doubt it
will make much of a difference." Daniel gave him a confused look.

"Why not?" Xavier smiled.

"Because it was a hologram to start with..."

EPISODE 4 : When it Rains, it Pours
-----------------------------------

:Oh it's alright,: Tyger called back as he padded down the hall,
:She's sound asleep.:

**********

Jubilee tried to become one with the wall, as the tiger strolled
past her, and wished she was a telepath. She hadn't realized how hard
it was to eavesdrop on people when only one of them was talking.

:I'm not gonna learn anything like this,: She thought. :and I've
_got_ to find out what that kid is up to.:
Jubilee frowned, :Well,
maybe not kid, after all I'm almost sixteen and they still treat me
like I'm twelve.:
She thought evil thoughts about the other X-men, but
only for a moment. :I 'spose when your going on ancient it's hard to
remember how old everyone else is.:
She relented, and watched the tiger
stroll down the hallway

Jubilee had managed to find a vantage point safely above
eye-level, even for the tiger. Plus, she could see half-way down the
hall in both directions. Now if she could only _hear_ something.

**********

Tyger padded down the hall, all of his attention focused on
keeping an eye on Logan, who was quietly shadowing him, and on
following Xavier's faint scent trail.

:I wonder if even Sasha can help me now.: He grumbled to
himself, :I don't trust these people, and if they find out...: Tyger
shook his head sadly. :We all walk the paths that we are given.
Gods grant them the wisdom to see that truth.:

Tyger was so distracted by the combination of trailing, watching,
and musing, that he failed to notice Jubilee, and was woefully
unprepared for Jsssp's untimely arrival.

**********

Elsewhere in the world, in the midst of a unpopulated mountain
range, a storm raged, lightning cascading down the sky. An empty cliff
edge was taking the brunt of the storm, the rocks that formed it
glowing and melting as strike after lightning strike hit the battered
ground. Then finally, in a crescendo of thunder and lightning the storm
made its final strike, and the sky cleared.

Standing on what seconds before had been molten stone, a midnight
black stag posed. Its pale blue eyes flashed angrily, and the
rain-washed sunlight echoed off its ivory horns. It flung its head up
to test the wind, and it slowly turned to face the West and, half-way
across the globe, the X-men's mansion.

::Mngr. Gnnrm, grsmn.:: It stated, resolutely.

**********

Tyger felt the world fall out from under him, as he fought to
hold onto the form he had been given. He crouched in the hallway, tail
lashing, and gleaming fangs brandished in a soundless roar. He had not
expected the Knlir to find them so soon.

:Kendor soln, kendar kototh,: he chanted silently to himself,
:kendor soln, kendar kototh.: Slowly the after-affects wore off and
Tyger straightened. He glanced back over his shoulder to where
Wolverine crouched, frozen. Tyger sighed. :Thank Gods, at least that
kicked in.:
He quickly released the mindblock, and Logan slowly
returned to reality, the past few seconds simply 'missing' from his
mind. Tyger turned and loped towards Xavier's office. :Sasha will
have my head over this one.:
He lamented silently as he ran.

**********

Jubilee was very very still until the tiger has gotten far out of
sight. She watched as Logan crept out of the shadows to follow Tyger,
and shivered. :I gotta warn Prof!: She thought in near hysterical
calmness. :He's a dead man walking!: She giggled as she scrambled down
from her post. :Or a dead man sitting: she amended, her mind trying
desperately to steer itself away from what she had seen, but the scene
played itself out like a broken record.

Tyger had frozen, snarling, as another form had attempted to fuse
itself around him. His shape twisting and stretching, into something so
foreign Jubilee couldn't find the words, or thoughts to describe it.
Then the thing had faded, and Tyger had done something to Wolvie, who
didn't even seem to have noticed! And now the thing was headed
straight for the Prof! :X-men never have bad days,: Jubilee grumbled
as she headed down a side corridor to catch up, :_God_ has bad days,
and takes them out on us.:

**********

Beast stuck his head into Xavier's office, and knocked politely,
yet pointlessly. It's was hard to sneak up on a telepath.

"What is it Hank?" Xavier asked, turning from the computer to
greet the new arrival. Beast waved the note covered paper excitedly.

"I have discovered something amazing!" He replied, "Something
quite extraordinary about our fine feline friend." Xavier raised an
eyebrow in an unprompted Spock imitation.

"Fascinating."

**********

"Um.. Rogue?" Rogue looked down from counting the ceiling tiles,
and the chair thumped down from two legs, to four.

"You're awake!" Rogue commented intelligently. Daniel looked at
her for a moment, leaning against the wall and fighting off sleep.

"Barely." She finally replied. "But I heard Tyger..." She trailed
off, as she tried to remember. A tiny voice in the back of her mind
nagged at her to go back to sleep. She shook her head angrily.
"Something... happened to Tyger, it woke me up." The tiny voice got
louder. "Where is he?" she managed to ask just before the tiny voice
took over, and she slid down the wall, sound asleep.

Rogue caught Daniel before the girl hit the floor. She carried
her back into the medlab, and put Daniel her onto the bed.

"You're sure are heavy fer a hologram." She commented to the
sleeping teen. "'Ah don' know. Maybe he's right, 'ah just don' know.."

**********

Jubilee stuck her head in Beast's lab. :Dammit, where's backup
when you _need_ it?:
She thought as she realized the be-furred
scientist was elsewhere. :That leaves Cyc or Storm,: She frowned, as
she headed back out the door. :and neither one's on the way...Murphy's
a dead man.:

**********

"Can you see Professor? I've worked it out a dozen times and still
come to the same conclusion. The cat cannot possibly be a creation of
Daniel's mind. Not unless you think she is capable of such delicate
work..." Beast looked at Xavier questioningly.

"No. I believe you are indeed correct Hank," Xavier replied, "it
seems our original problem has magnified a thousand fold." He looked
over at the door. "And it appears to be heading our way."

Tyger jog-trotted into the room, coming to a stop facing Beast
and Xavier.

::I've missed something haven't I.:: He noted.

"It doesn't seem to be as much what _you_ missed, as what _we_
are missing." Beast responded.

"And why we are missing it." added Xavier.

::Oh.:: Tyger blinked. ::That was for your own safety.:: Xavier
frowned.

"I do not see how mind-wiping someone could be seen as a
positive thing." Tyger winced.

::It's not a mind-wipe its a mind-block, and I seriously doubt
you would be happier, or healthier if I removed them.::

"Still, that choice should belong to us, not you."

::I should make you take them out yourself,:: Tyger replied
unhappily, ::but that would just be vindictive.:: The great cat
closed its eyes and concentrated. The blue aura flared into being,
and then faded out as Tyger looked up. ::Happy?:: Hank looked
smug.

"I was right!" he said triumphantly. "It _was_ an illusion, among
other things.." He paused. "Speaking of which, do you require medical
attention?"

"Medical attention?" The three turned at Jubilee's outraged tone.
"You're gonna _help_ it??"

**********

"'Ah wish Remy was here." sighed Rogue. She gazed silently at
Daniel's sleeping form.

"'Dat so chere?" she was answered, as a figure stepped into the
room. "'An here I thought I'd been gon' so long you'd forgot me."
He smiled "Guess I been wrong, no?"

**********

"Um.. Jubilee, is there a problem?" Xavier asked calmly.

"Yeah there's a problem! First it appears out of nowhere, then it
attacks Wolvie, and now it just tried to turn into something from a
Z-rated horror movie, and you ask if there's a problem?!" Tyger's
eyes narrowed, and a soft rumble-snarl worked its way out of his
clenched teeth. Jubilee ignored the tiger. "If you aren't willing to
deal with it _I_ am!"

Sparklies appeared for the second time that day, but these were
no playful sparklies, these were `sub-molecular-explosion-death-in-the-
making' sparklies.

"Not again." Beast sighed.

"Look," began Xavier, "I'm sure we can all work something out,
without needing to resort to violence...", but he was duly ignored.

:You do not understand..: Tyger started to say, but Jubilee cut
him off.

"What the hell are you?" She demanded, "I mean, first your just
a figment of Daniel's 'magination, now you're some shapeshifting
alien with seizures!" Tyger glared at her, and then deliberately
dropped his battle stance.

::I am a Kendass.:: He rumbled. ::And I _will_ do what I
deem is best for my Chosen.::

**********

"How'd you get in shugar?" Rogue asked worriedly, "This ain't
'xactly Fort Knox, but..." Remy smiled smugly.

"'Der ain't no system 'dat could keep me out, chere. You know
dat. An' wi' such a one inside..." They were silent for a few
moments, and then Remy turned to look at Daniel.

"An' who be the kid, chere?" Rogue sighed.

"You better sit down, s'long story..." Remy snagged a chair from
nearby, and Rogue began to relate the day's events...

**********

"Your chosen what?" retorted Jubilee, "Snack food? Religious
faction? Sorry to break it to ya' but its been done already."

::My Chosen is...my Chosen.:: Tyger replied, as what little
hope he had clung too escaped. :Sasha will never forgive me.: He
lamented silently :Gods, do not let them ask, if ever I did you any
service, do not let them ask...:
His thoughts were interrupted, this
time by Xavier.

"Just what is a Kendass, Tyger?"

:And so another reality dies.: Tyger sighed and began to answer
the question...

::The Kendass are the Guardians of the Path of the Gods...::

**********

Daniel climbed out of a sound sleep, to the sound of people
talking. People with accents. She open one eye. Rogue was leaning up
against an empty bed talking to someone in a chair. Daniel opened the
other eye. The stranger was wearing a trenchcoat, with a mop of
reddish-brown hair falling over his red eyes.

:Red eyes?: Daniel decided now was a good time to wake up, a
_very_ good time. She struggled to sit up, which brought the previous
conversation to a halt. As the stranger moved closer to the bed, she
suddenly realized who it was. :Like the accent wasn't a hint: she
snapped at herself, :I can't be _that_ out of it...:

"You gonna stay awake this time?" Rogue asked gently. Daniel
blinked, and then nodded. Rogue glanced back at Remy "This's my
friend shugar, he ain't gonna hurt you." Daniel re-focused on the
trenchcoated figure.

"Gambit?" She asked sleepily. Remy looked at Rogue, and then
back at Daniel and shook his head.

"Sorry petite, I t'ink you got me confused wi'd somebody else."

EPISODE 3 : Missed Expectations
------------------------------

"So we are busy caring for someone, who at a moment's notice, could
cause this fragile sphere on which we live, to be no more?" Beast asked
incredulously.

"Yes." Xavier replied calmly.

**********

"Does this sound like a stupid idea to anyone else?" Jubilee interrupted
angrily. "I mean, she could nuke everyone. Poof! Just like that!" Scott looked
uncomfortable.

"It's not that we don't want to help her Professor, but she may be too
dangerous to..." he trailed off very self-consciously. Xavier gave him a
searching look, and then turned to the rest of the X-men.

"This is a _child_ we are talking about here. She has an amazing ability,
and I seriously doubt that she would purposefully use it to harm any of us, or
our universe."

"Yes, but what about unconsciously?" Beast noted, "She cannot control
her perceptions of reality, and with even one small slip, she could change
our universe forever!" He looked around for support, and found it in the
others' faces. Xavier looked a little pale.

"If we simply tell her what is reality and what is not, she shouldn't cause
any problems." He objected. Wolverine looked far from convinced.

"Uh huh, unless she gets mad and forgets, or she simply decides that its
time to change things." Logan countered. "We'd all be a lot safer if she wasn't
here."

"You don't mean you'd try to kill her?" Xavier asked astonished. Wolverine
shrugged.

"You said she wasn't alive Prof, if we can convince her she's dead maybe
she'll go away." Logan, to his credit, did look a little uncomfortable with the
idea. Xavier's reply was lost to the sudden reappearance of Tyger.

::If I have a vote, I would remind all of you that my Kitling is a little hard
to kill::
He smiled, another flash of gleaming canines. ::Not to mention
me.::
Everyone's eyes snapped from the tiger to Daniel's motionless form,
as she stirred and opened her eyes.

"Tyger? I had the funniest dream..." She trailed off as she realized where
she was. No one but Wolverine noticed the small shake in reality as Daniel
awoke. "It wasn't a dream." She sat up. "Damn." Tyger smiled and nosed her
gently.

::Welcome to the real world Kitling.:: Daniel smiled, and slipped off
thebed onto the tiger's broad back. ::Shall we be off?:: The rest off the
grouplook startled, and more than one unconscientiously moved to block the
door.Xavier gave Tyger an odd look.

"We would prefer that you remain here for the time being." he started to
say, only to be interrupted by Daniel's frigid stare.

"You tried to kill my tiger." She accused, "I could care less what you
'prefer', now get the hell out of my way."

Xavier moved his chair precisely between the pair and the door.

"No."

The X-men stood battle-ready, but more than a little shocked by Xavier's
actions. Fortunately, so was Daniel. She sat silent for a moment.

"You can't just keep me here, you have no right!" She accused. Xavier
shook his head.

"We cannot allow you to leave, you are to great a danger to the public,
mutant and human alike." He smiled sadly. "And yes we can keep you here.
You cannot face down the X-men child, please don't try."

:Tyger?: Daniel asked quietly. :What do I do?: The tiger's tail was busy
keeping beat to a silently melody, and he took a moment to answer.

:I don't know. We can try to leave, but...: He turned his head back to look
up at her. :If we stay you might learn something, plus they can't always be
here, we can leave later.:
Daniel looked back at him silently, her thoughts
dancing in small panicky circles.

Xavier watched the silent pair unhappily. He could neither hear nor guess
at what they were saying, and it wasn't a pleasant feeling. He could only
hope his bluff had worked, if not, he doubted the X-men would survive. Their
only chance rested on what Daniel believed, if she thought she could take
them on and win, it would probably happen, but if she believed what he had
said... Xavier waited quietly, but far from calmly.

Daniel looked up from Tyger to Xavier. There was the briefest flicker of
the red battle aura, and then it died.

"Fine." She snapped. "Have it your way." Xavier simply nodded.

:I think it would be best if we withdrew.: He silently told the other X-men.
:But someone should stay nearby.: The group withdrew cautiously, leaving
Rogue to watch the door.

**********

Back in the murky depths of the astral plain, Jsssp was on the receiving
end of a stern military banishment. When those in command had discovered
the intruder's mindecho in the computer banks, Jsssp knew his life was
worthless.

He tried to explain, to point out that the mindecho was sentient-loud only
for the first few seconds of transmission, then had diminished considerably.
He had assumed it was a glitch in the computer, now he was told that the
computer never made mistakes.

Jsssp wailed in anguish as his sentence was pronounced, but it had never
been in doubt. Any failure in the ranks was punished with banishment to the
world and reality of the intruder, to live an allotted timespan as a corporal
being, with only one hope of return. Jsssp felt the council's minds join to fling
him from the plain. The last words he heard from his world were the
command of the council.

::Mngr. Gnnrm, grsmn.::

(None must tread the path of the Gods but the Knlir. Seek the traveler,
and send it to its rest.)

**********

Inside the medlab Daniel slipped down off Tyger's back and climbed back
onto the bed.

"The X-men were supposed to _help_ us Tyger." She complained
miserably. "Now they just want to kill us." She rested her head on her knees
and looked at the tiger. "I really blew it this time didn't I." Tyger stuck his
head in her face and sniffed.

:Nope. Don't smell anything burning, must have been a combustion-less
explosion.:
He got a faint smile for his efforts. :Kitling: he sighed :You are
not the only one who made mistakes, I must admit I am not perfect.:
Daniel
laughed.

"That's a first! But for real, I almost killed him Tyger." She shivered and
seemed to shrink in on herself. "I could have really hurt him," she repeated
hopelessly, "but I couldn't let you get hurt like that!" Tyger rumble-purred
comfortingly.

:But you didn't Kitling, you stopped, you didn't hurt him.:

"Do you think this is a dream Tyger?" Daniel asked, abruptly changing the
subject. The tiger looked at her for a moment and then shook his head.

:No Kitling, this is not a dream. But I do not think it is a comic book
either.:
He added. :You cannot count on what you know as being real. Wait
and let them tell you, don't assume.:
Daniel smiled.

"When you assume, you make an 'ass' out of 'u' and 'me'" she quoted
happily. Tyger returned the smile and then nudged her.

:I think you need to rest small one, and please don't start glowing without
warning me first, alright?:
Daniel discovered that she suddenly _was_ tired,
and was sound asleep within minuets.

**********

Rogue waited patiently outside the medlab, and caught only brief
snatches of the conversation, and then only from Daniel's side. She leaned
the chair back up against the wall and tried to think of something to do until
the two decided to leave the medlab. She had actually gotten up to
considering counting the ceiling tiles when Tyger walked out of the medlab.
Without Daniel. Rogue stood up hastily, the chair clunking to rest behind her.

"Um hi." She said awkwardly. :What do 'ah say to a cat the size of a
minivan?:

:Hi, will do quite nicely.: Tyger responded, and his tail drooped a little as
Rogue jumped. :Look, I don't bite, no matter what Jubilee told you.: He
complained quietly.

"Huh? How..?"

:I guessed. Look, we need to talk.: Rogue eyed the tiger warily.

"An' why me?"

:Because you might actually listen.: Rogue bristled a little at that.

"'Ah see." She sat back down in the chair. Tyger started to pace, in front
of the medlab door. "An' just what is't you want ta talk about?" She finally
asked, tired of waiting. Tyger paused in his pacing, and turned to look at her.

:Why does my chosen scare you?:

**********

As Beast wandered back to his private lab, his mind kept skipping back to
Tyger's reappearance. There was something wrong, he just couldn't put a
finger on it... Hank sighed, and retreated into his lab to think, and to work on
his current favorite waste of time, Myst.

**********

"Wha? 'Ah never said..!" Rogue replied hastily.

:Immaterial. Do you know why?:

"Other than she can wipe me out wi' a stray thought?" she answered
sarcastically. "'Ah have no idea."

:Who said she could do that?: Tyger asked calmly.

"The Professor!" Rogue answered, exasperated by the line of questioning.

:How would he know?:

**********

As Hank worked his way through Myst, he tried to puzzle out just what
was bothering him. He carefully went through each step of days events, but
each time he got close to the problem his mind suddenly switched tracks,
forcing him to work inwards again. Now his curiosity was fully engaged. He
nabbed a pencil and paper from a nearby workstation and started to work it
out on paper.

**********

"What? You must be jokin'. The Professor i'nt one 't make things up!"

:As I remember, he had a theory. Theories are made to be broken.:
Tyger yawned. :And I think that one is at best half-right.:

"Why?"

:If Daniel could do half the things you are worried about, I seriously doubt
this universe would exist.:
Rogue paled considerably. :But she cannot,:
Tyger continued. :because her senses are constantly second-guessing her
subconscious.:
Now Rogue just looked confused. Tyger sighed. :If I told you
that the chair you are sitting on was an illusion would you believe me?:

"No."

:If you were not touching it would you?:

"Well, maybe.., 'Ah don'..."

:And if I didn't tell you it was an illusion, you would simply assume it was
real, correct?:

"'Ah guess..."

:So why is it so hard to believe that Daniel's senses can keep her gift
under control? At the very worst she will simply believe it is an illusion.:

Rogue looked half-convinced.

"'Ah don't know, but 'ah cannot make that kind'a decision, that's up to
Xavier an' the others." Tyger gave up.

:Where are the rest of the X-men, anyway?:

"What do ya' mean?"

:Um, Gambit? Bishop? Jean Grey? Iceman? Banshee? Archangel?:
Tyger tried to remember if he'd missed anyone, and decided not to push his
luck.

"Who?" Rogue replied "The only X-man 'ah know's not here's Chamber,
an' no one's seen him since he left with LongShot."

:This is most definitely not a comic book.: Tyger replied somewhat
absentmindedly.

"'Ah should hope not!"

:Sorry. I meant that this universe seems to be significantly different that
the ones in the comics back home.:

"Is that good or bad?" she asked confused.

:I have no idea.: Tyger admitted :However I do need to talk to Xavier, if
you could watch Daniel?:
Rogue glanced over at the medlab, and then back
at the tiger.

"'Ah can't let you..."

:I'm only a figment of a deranged imagination remember?: Tyger
commented acidly.

**********

"Of course!" Beast chortled as he waved the note covered paper,
excitedly, "It was right there in front of me. Ah, what tangled webs we weave
when first we practice to deceive." He headed out the door towards Xavier's
'office'. "Or perhaps," he mused, "t'would be, more appropriate to say, what
tangled webs he weaves, to make us _think_ what she _believes_."

**********

:Besides, I'm quite sure Logan will be following me around anyway.:
Tyger glanced down the hallway. Rogue looked torn, figment or not, she
didn't really want to be on the receiving end of Daniel's righteous anger when
she came looking for 'her tiger'.

"But 'ah, 'ah mean..." She objected, "What about Daniel?"

:Oh its alright,: Tyger called back as he padded down the hall, :She's
sound asleep.:

EPISODE 2 : Reality Check
-------------------------

"This could be a problem." remarked Xavier as calmly as possible.

**********

As Xavier spoke, the tiger turned its head up to look at the
observation booth. Jubilee and Daniel both glanced over reflexively, but all
they saw was blank wall. Daniel turned to look at Tyger questioningly.

"What is it Tyger?" The cat swung its head back around.

:There is someone there,: he replied, :three someones actually.: He
turned back to look at the rather startled trio.

**********

"A rather complex problem." Xavier amended, the cat's mental voice
echoing in his head.

"Is it a threat Professor?" Storm asked, staring at the tiger.

"I certainly hope not Storm." He answered calmly, as he intercepted
Scott's move to hit the alarm. "However, I don't think we should push the
matter any farther than we have to." Xavier sent a very focused mindcall to
the other X-men currently on campus. :We have an interesting situation
building in the Danger Room, I would appreciate your presence. Soon.:
He
turned and started to head down into the Danger Room. Scott and Storm
looked at each other and then followed protectively.

**********

:He has called the others.: Tyger noted, and cocked his head. :The
three are coming down here.:
He turned to look at Daniel. :Do not fear
Kitling,:
he rumbled reassuringly, :I will not let you come to harm.: Daniel
looked around nervously. With the illusion gone, she could now see the
Danger Room for what it was. She turned reluctantly to face Jubilee.

"You really are Jubilee aren't you." She stated miserably. Jubilee
nodded hesitantly, looking like she was ready to start the fireworks up again
at a moments notice. Daniel, on the other hand, looked like someone who
had come home, only to find someone else living there. Tyger rumble-purred
and leaned into her, sending her stumbling off-balance. Jubilee jumped back
nervously, and then jumped again as the door slid open. Xavier entered
flanked by Storm and Scott.

:The others come.: Tyger noted, as Wolverine, Rogue, and Beast
slipped through the door behind Xavier. The newcomers came to a stop a
half-dozen feet from Daniel and Tyger. Jubilee glanced nervously between
the two groups and then retreated to safety.

"Um, Professor?" Beast began, "Why is there a rather large albino
Panthera tigris in the Danger Room?" Tyger gave him an annoyed look.

:I am not an albino. If I was, I would not have any coloring at all, and
I am most decoratively striped.:
He noted. Hank looked more surprised than
annoyed.

"It talks?" he asked. Xavier shook his head.

"Actually it seems to be telepathic. It also managed to appear out of
thin air."

"Who's the kid?" Wolverine asked suddenly. Daniel suddenly became the
focus of everyone in the room.

"I..uh..." Daniel looked desperately to Tyger for help. He looked back at
her. "I'm, um.. Daniel. Daniel Rosada...um, hi?" Everyone looked at her.

"She seems to be from an alternate reality." remarked Xavier, "Our
world, or universe, exists in hers as a.." he looked at Daniel, "I believe
a comic book, is that right?" Daniel nodded. "Therefore introductions seem
a little redundant. Unless the tiger...?" Tyger sniffed.

:I have a name. It is Tyger, with a 'y'. I believe I know all your
given titles.:

"Tyger, Tyger burning bright" mused Beast. Tyger smiled, showing a
rather impressive set of canines.

:Exactly.: He turned to look at Xavier. :Might I ask sanctuary here
until Danny can find a way home?:
Xavier glanced back at the others.

"What do you think?" he asked. Hank shrugged.

"I see little objection, I only wonder what to feed Tyger." he replied
smiling. Wolverine grimaced.

"I don't like it Professor. How do you know it isn't some sort of trap?"
he accused softly. Storm gave him an icy glance.

"Are you suggesting a child could compromise the safety of this
mansion?" she ask incredulously. Daniel glared at her, ready to defend her
age group, but Tyger nudged her into silence. Scott entered the growing
debate.

"Child or not Storm, what about that cat? We can't just let them roam
around the Mansion unguarded!" The discussion went downhill from there.
The X-men split into two groups, with Wolverine, Scott and Jubilee arguing
against and the rest of the group arguing for. Tyger and Daniel were left to
their own devices, save for an occasional glance. The two retreated across
the room.

**********

:Perhaps I should leave.: Tyger commented. :Most of their arguments
center on the fact that I might accidentally eat someone.:
He noted acidly.
Daniel shook her head.

"I'm not going to let them force you into leaving!" she hissed quietly.
Tyger glanced sideways at her.

:You know, you can just think it and I can hear you.: He rumbled. :As
for my leaving, I am beginning to think it might be better if we both left.:

Daniel looked at him silently.

:Really?: She thought. :Buthwerewouldwego?: Tyger gave her an
annoyed look.

:First of all, think slowly so I can actually understand you. And
secondly why does it matter where we go? I will protect you, and you must
know someone who can help you.:
He looked over at the arguing X-men
:Other than these.: Daniel shrugged.

:Wecango..: she started, and then concentrated as Tyger glared at her.
:We can go and try and find Gateway or maybe Cable or someone.: Tyger
smiled.

:Much better. So shall we? This is getting tiring.: Daniel looked
over at the stalemated group and sighed.

:Okay.: Tyger lowered one shoulder so she could scramble onto his
back.

:I will hide us from sight so that we can slip past them. Try to think
of nothing.:
Daniel tried, and failed miserably. Tyger sighed. :No, stop,
concentrate on a breeze, a very soft one. Think about what if feels like,
what it sounds like.:
Daniel tried again, and this time Tyger nodded. :Here
we go then...:
The pair shimmered and vanished. The arguing group didn't
notice. Tyger started moving for the door.

**********

Wolverine's heightened senses sent off small alarms as the pair
disappeared, but he was too far gone into the argument to pay much
attention.

Just as the pair was passing the group Wolverine looked up suddenly.

"Anyone else feel a breeze?" He asked suddenly. The group fell silent
and looked at him quizzically. Daniel froze on Tyger's back. The breeze
faltered and died.

:Come on Daniel!: Tyger snapped :Pull together!: Daniel shook out of
her shock and the breeze stuttered back into being. Wolverine spun to face
where the pair was standing.

"There's someone there!" he snarled and leapt, his deadly silver claws
flashing.

:Shit: Tyger hissed, as he dove sharply to the side trying to avoid the
attack. The pair popped back into existence, a flickering blue battle aura
springing into being around the tiger. Tyger managed to dodge most of the
claws, but one caught his hind leg and slashed downwards crippling it. Tyger
stumbled and the jag threw Daniel off. Tyger stood on three legs facing
Wolverine, a snarling roar warning the X-man off.

Daniel lay frozen on the floor watching as the two faced off. Somewhere
faintly in the background, she could hear the shouts of the others, as
Wolverine lunged again.

The two combatants crashed together again, and Tyger managed to
smash Wolverine sideways with a lucky blow, as the silvery claws raked his
face leaving him half-blinded.

Watching the fight, something inside Daniel snapped, how _dare_ he hurt
her Tyger!

She rose from the floor to face Wolverine.

**********

Wolverine snarled in fury as he lit into the tiger, he knew those two
had been up to something. Now the others had to see that he had been right,
this thing was dangerous! Then he froze as the girl behind the tiger stood.

**********

Xavier watched the battle in shock, and had just begun to move as Daniel
rose from the floor. Xavier froze a second time, his mind oddly blank as
reality warped and twisted around him.

**********

Tyger fell back from Wolverine's last attack, blinded and whimpering in
pain. Then he felt Daniel rise from behind him. He turned to warn her away
when he sensed the power building through his mindlink. :Kitling!: He
pleaded frantically the instant before the world ended.

**********

Daniel heard Tyger's plea as it echoed faintly in the background of her
mind, her entire soul focused on one thing.

The X-man who had dared to hurt her tiger.

**********

Time stopped.

The Danger Room vanished.

The world was replaced with a grey misty darkness.

No one could move.

In the center of the chaos stood the figure of a fourteen year old girl,
wrapped in the flaming red aura that had ripped the world apart.

**********

:Kitling!: Tyger yelled through the mindlink, trying to reach Daniel.
:Kitling listen to me! Kitling please!: He struggled to rise, to stop her.
:Please!: he yowled desperately.

Daniel turned from Wolverine to look at Tyger, the aura flickering like
mad, as she suddenly realized what she was doing. She took one stumbling
step towards the tiger and reality snapped.

**********

The aura vanished.

The world reappeared.

Time started.

Daniel collapsed.

Tyger vanished.

**********

Needless to say, once the chaos had stopped, it started. Wolverine
moved in to finish off the threat and was held back by a sudden wind from
Storm.

"Wolverine!" Xavier snapped, his patience completely gone. "Stop it!"
Logan looked over at the Professor angrily.

"But she almost killed us Professor! And who knows where that tiger
went to."

"Actually," Xavier answered, " I know exactly where Tyger went." The
others looked at him. Xavier sighed. "First we need to get her into the
medlab, then I will explain." The rest of the group looked a little confused,
but Beast carefully picked up the unconscious Daniel and the others followed
him to the medlab.

**********

"Um, Professor?" Beast looked confused, "She seems to be dead." The
rest of the group crowed around the bed looked shocked.

"But she's breathing!" objected Storm.

"And not cold or stiff neither!" added Rogue. Wolverine nodded a
puzzled agreement.

"She sure doesn't smell dead." he noted. Hank threw up his hands in
disgust.

"I _know_ that! But look at the machines! Not a thing!" He pointed to
the offending equipment. Xavier quietly entered the conversation.

"That is because she _is_ dead." Everyone turned to look at him, their
arguments leaping once again to the fore. Xavier quickly headed off the
brewing comments. "Or perhaps a better explanation would be that she is not
alive." Now he had them completely confused.

"Excuse me?" Jubilee countered angrily, "She sure doesn't look dead to
me, _or_' she amended, 'not alive!' The others nodded in agreement. Xavier
pointed to the machines hooked to Daniel.

"Those say she is not alive, and they are correct. She cannot be alive
because she is not here!" That statement brought even more confused looks.
Xavier sighed. "She is some kind of astral projection. That is why she looks
alive." Wolverine shook his head.

"Hate to burst your bubble Prof," he interrupted, "but you can't touch
and astral projection, or smell it." Xavier shrugged.

"I am quite aware of that Logan, but the fact remains that she is
indeed a projection. However I have a theory that might explain both Tyger
and that interesting twist of reality back in the Danger Room." He waved a
hand at Daniel's silent form. "I believe that she can somehow alter reality
to match what she _perceives_ as reality. That is why you can smell her and
touch her. Because it never occurred to her that you couldn't! She changed
reality with that belief. Secondly, Tyger seems to be nothing more than a
projection of her mind. But because, for some reason, she believes that the
cat exists, it does. Or at least that is what I assume, since he vanished
when she passed out."

"But Professor," Rogue countered, "'Ah thought you said we's just a
comic in her world?" Xavier nodded. "Then how come she didn' just not
believe in us?"

"I have no idea Rogue, but for some reason she was willing to accept
the fact that we do exist. Which I am rather thankful for."

"So we are busy caring for someone, who at a moment's notice, could
cause this fragile sphere on which we live, to be no more?" Beast asked
incredulously.

"Yes." Xavier replied calmly.

{This is my first attempt at a fanfic. Please bear with me, it may be a
little shaky at first, but there _is_ a story in here! This is the first
eposode so I will include a brief summ-up so you will know what you are
getting into.

Sum-Up : This is the story of Daniel, a girl who is dumped into the X-Men
universe through an odd twist of fate (are there any other
kinds?) and her adventures, fights, arguments, etc... as she
tries to find her way back home. Nothing in this story is
there by chance, _everthing_ shows up again later in the story.
(But not in this eposode!)

aren't. The story, however is _mine_, copyright 1996}

EPISODE 1 : Rely on the Tiger
-----------------------------

It was a dark and stormy night. This might have been a truly remarkable
experience except for the fact that it had rained non-stop for the past week.
One can only appreciate so many dark and stormy nights. So it should come
as no suprize that somewhere around Wednesday Daniel had stopped
watching the lightning dance, and started watching the floodwaters creep up
the hill.

The forecasters swore up and down that the rain would stop any time now,
but Daniel watched silently as the denizens of the nearby game reserve
migrated towards higher ground. A silent, and soaked, parade of deer,
rabbits, raccoons, and now squirrels wound its way through her yard. One of
the deer paused as it passed Daniel's window and stared at her for a
moment, eyes wide and frightened. She touched a hand to the pane of glass,
and the deer turned and bolted. Daniel sighed, and sunk back down onto her
bed.

"Damn deer." She snapped at the ceiling. She hadn't been trying to
scare it, why couldn't they see that? The answer was the same as it had been
yesterday, and they day before... She was human, humans killed deer. The
deer might be a little slow, but they weren't stupid. She glared angrily at
the tiger poster above her bed.

"Tyger," she declared, "life is not fair." The tiger declined to
respond and she gave up, rolling over and fishing a comic from the pile
strewn next to her bed. Spider-Man. "Nope." She tossed it back into the
mess, and fished out another. This time it was ElfQuest : The Hidden Years.
"Huh, elves. Nope, not in a wolf-ish mood." She dropped the comic back into
the chaos and tried again. Ranma 1/2. She paused a moment and flipped
through it. "Been there, read that." She released it back into its natural
habitat, and actually used _both_ arms to scrounge. X-Men. She flipped
through it and rolled back over. "Only read this one seven thousand times.
Going for a new world record, drumroll please..." The tiger still neglected
to reply from its lofty perch, and silently stared down at her instead. She
gave up on it and withdrew into the comic.

Half-way through the comic the lights went out. A few mumbled curses
bounced around in the dark as Daniel searched for the flashlight. Had her
parents heard them, she would have been grounded until death. Locating the
flashlight, she resumed reading, praying that her parents wouldn't barge in.
So, of course, they did.

"Are you alright Danny?" Her mother called from the doorway.

Yes, thought Daniel, I'm dead. Go away.

"Danny?"

"I'm fine mom." She finally answered when it became obvious that the
intruder was not leaving.

"You could have said so Danny, you had me scared for a moment."

Good, though Daniel, and she waited for her mother to leave. She
finally did, and Daniel returned to the comic.

Three and a half comics later, a moanful creak came from the window.
Daniel looked over briefly. There was nothing there, even in the evening
gloom she could easily see the ancient oak that stood bravely at guard. The
last remaining sunlight cast a dancing leaf pattern on the wall. Daniel
watched for a little and then went back to reading.

A moment latter the floodwaters wore away the last supporting soil
around the roots of the previously mentioned oak, which came crashing
through the wall, tearing the tiger in half, crushing the bed, and compacting
most of the room down to the height of a small dog.

Daniel was oblivious to this fact, for her the world had ceased to exist
the moment the tree hit the bed.

**********

There was silence. That in itself was rather unremarkable, because
Daniel was not making any noise, but considering the fact that she was
_trying_ to make as much as humanly possible, it was terrifying.

HelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelp, she screamed
soundlessly into the darkness. Somewhere the message hit home and she
was answered by an unhappy rumble. She shut up.

Grmmggggnmnnnmgr? The voice queried.

Don'tkillme! Daniel thought panicking. The other voice was silent. She
wished she could shrink, so the voice wouldn't notice her. That was a pipe
dream, but something small...a mouse or cricket, something small and
harmless...She tried to think mouse-like thoughts.

Gnnnrgm? Mgnr. Grssmn. Gnnrggggm? The voice faded away and she
was left once more in silence. A few moments passed and she began to wish
that the voice would come back, it had been petrifying, but at least it was
something. She tried yelling again, but the voice was gone.

Hello?Anybody?Somebody?Hello?Help!Help!AnyonePleaseSomeone
Anyone!
Once again she was interrupted, but this time it was not the
grumbling voice.

Who's there? The new voice asked, not snarling at all. Daniel tried
to move towards the voice, but found that it made little difference.

MememememDannyDanielDannyMemememe She cried, praying for
help.

Calm down Danny, there is nothing out here to hurt you. Remain calm.
She shut up. Now Danny, do you know where you are? She started to
reply, but the voice but her off. Nevermind. She paused, confused. You
talk too fast child, I can barely hear what you are saying. Try to think each
word out instead of yelling.
Daniel thought for a moment.

Where...Am...I? She said, very carefully. The voice paused a moment
before answering.

I'm not quite sure, you seem to be drifting about in the astral plane.
Do you have any idea how you got here?
Daniel thought back along her
day, from the visit with the deer to the last panel in the comic. After
that there was only darkness. Concentrating on remembering, she only caught
a whiff of the voice's shock.

Don't...know, She finally stated, S'all...black. She waited for the
other voice to reply... and waited... and then started to panic.

ComeBack!ComeBack!ComeBack!ComeBack!ComeBack!ComeBack!
She yelled, praying that the voice would forgive whatever she had done
wrong, and help her. I'msorryIcan'tremeber!Iswear! The voice cut in
immediately.

No child! I haven't gone anywhere, something you thought just startled
me that's all. I'm not leaving.
Daniel once again abruptly cut off her
distress call.

Youcanheremethink? She asked incredulously. The voice couldn't have
tricked her, it was a _nice_ voice! She began to lose it again.

What? Oh no, no, I wasn't tricking you child, I though you knew, that's
what you've been doing all along! You can't talk out here, you think. My God,
how did you ever end up here?
The voice trailed off for a moment, and she
though she could hear a mumbled voice pick up where the clear one had left
off. She didn't care. She _couldn't_ care. She curled up in a ball and
though very hard about home. Click your heels together Dorothy... But it
didn't work. She floated aimlessly, more out of helplessness than choice, and
waited for the voice to deliver its verdict. It was going to leave her here,
she knew. Just like all grown-ups, always.

But the voice did not go away, and returned quickly as it realized she
was drifting off. Don't go! Come here, we can help you, I think. I've been
talking to a friend of mine--

Thefuzzyvoice? Daniel interrupted, out of reflex. The other voice
seemed a little startled.

The fuzzy voice? I really don't know, but I need you to follow me
Danny, I can lead you back to my home, my world.

Whataboutme?IwannagoHOME! She panicked.

No, Danny, it's alright. We can help you, but only if you'll come
back with me. Please Danny.
She drifted silently for a moment.

Tyger, Tyger burning bright, grant the wish I wish tonight. She
thought dreamily. Tyger I wanna go home. Tyger... The other voice droned
on, always asking her something but she couldn't remember what. She
drifted lazily in its direction. Tyger The voice was very close now, and
she obediently followed it back and down towards its home. Going home
Tyger,
she thought Going Home.

**********

There was a sharp jolt and Daniel's eyes snapped open, she was in the
middle of some sort of building, but no one was around. The walls were all
gleaming white and metal, bringing to mind the septic smell of a hospital.

"Where the hell am I?" She asked no one in particular as she got up. She
got no answer, nor had expected one. She looked around. This place is
enormous!
she though, amazed. She tried to remember how she had ended
up in a hospital, which is what she finally decided it must be."Deer, comics,
noise," she replayed the events leading up to waking up, "dreaming, grumpy
voice, other voice, but how did I get here from my bedroom? And without
waking up?" She wandered along the wall until she came to a corner, and
then continued on. "And what was that freaky dream? That was too weird."
She missed having Tyger to talk to. She came to another corner. "Too many
comics. Maybe I'm still dreaming." She reached another corner. "And baby
makes three." She looked around again. "There _have_ to be doors here
someplace." She continued on. Another corner. She stopped. A nice, if large,
square room, with no doors.

She walked into the middle of the room, and glanced around. Still no
doors. "Alright people this is _no_ _Longer_ _FUNNY!_ "

**********

High above her in the control booth, Professor Xavier, Storm, and
Cyclops watched silently. At least until Daniel started yelling.

"I think," Storm noted, "that we have a problem." Xavier turned his
hover-chair to face the two.

"That is a incredible understatement Storm." He gestured back towards
Daniel. "Danny was a problem, but that was back when she was nothing
more than a lost o.o.b." Scott looked confused.

"O.o.b.?"

"Out of body," Xavier replied, "but it's no longer that simple. She
should _not_ have been able to do that." He pointed to Daniel's now pacing
form. "Normal o.o.b.'s leave their corporal body behind. They do not haul it
along like so much luggage." He sounded annoyed.

"I'm sure she did not mean it as a personal insult Professor." Commented
Storm, smiling. "From what you have told me she is little more than a lost
child."

"A little lost child?" Scott countered, "She reminds me of Jubilee, on
a sugar high and armed with a bazooka!"

"She looks harmless enough Scott, why don't you--" Storm's response was
rudely interrupted by an indrawn breath from Xavier. "Professor?" Xavier
simply pointed into the danger room.

**********

Daniel was facing away from the door, unable to see it through the
illusion, and didn't immediately notice the entrance of Jubilee. Jubilee,
however, did notice Daniel. The door slid shut with a clanking noise. Daniel
spun around to face it and saw Jubilee.

OhMyGod!It'sherIt'shercan'tbecan'tonlyastoryonlyacomic she babbled
mentally, causing Xavier no end of headaches. Her verbal response was only
a little more collected. "Who the _hell_ are you?" Jubilee looked faintly
startled.

"I," she replied snobishly, "am an X-Man. Who the hell are you?" The
two glared at each other for a moment.

"You're insane." Daniel finally announced. "There are no such thing as
X-Men, they're a comic book. Who are you _really_?" Jubilee looked like she
was having a small corinary.

"I am Jubilation Lee, an _X-Man_, and just who do you think _you_ are?
This is _my_ house." She snapped, advancing angrilly on Daniel.

**********

The trio in the control booth looked a little offended at the "my house"
bit, although Storm seemed to think it was funny.

"Don't you think we ought to stop this?" demanded Scott, "Someone
could get hurt." Xavier raised an eybrow.

"I think Daniel can take care of herself Scott."

"I was worried about Jubilee."

**********

Thisisjust_too_wierd though Daniel. WheretherehellamI? She
watched as Jubilee advanced angrilly. Thisisgettingwayouttahand She
summoned up what courage she had left and confronted the brat.

"I seriously _doubt_ this is _your_ house, even if you are and X-Man.
No, _especially_ if you are an X-Man!" She responded. "And trust me kid,
you don't look _nothin'_ like an X-Man." The last was an attack on Jubilee's
outfit, which was plain old workout clothes. Jubilee was nearing meltdown,
and simply stared at Daniel, looking like a dying fish, and trying to find
words.

"So, who are you supposed to be again?" Daniel asked.

**********

"I see your point." Xavier noted to Scott.

**********

"You...you..." Jubilee ran out of words, and her powers picked up where
the words left off.

"Oh, shit!" Daniel yelped, ducking the incoming "sparklies" in a rather
sloppy tuck-and-roll that would have shamed her gymnastics coach. Help!

She ended her roll up against something large and fuzzy...

And snarling.

"Tyger!"

**********

It had started when she was six. That was the year she had gotten her
first "Tyger", although it was then carring the name Kitty. Ever since then
she had collected pictures, minatures, books, viedos, anything that had a
bengal white tiger on it.

It had risen from a beloved toy, to as close to a totem as Daniel could
ever get. From her earliest memories it had awlays been a protector, and as
she grew it tranformed from a barrier between her and the dark, to someone
who would, and could protect her from anything. She had held tight to the
belief that if ghosts, demons, and things-that-go-bump-in-the-dark could
exist than it so followed that Tyger could protect her from them. The belief
had become so ingrained that she no longer questioned its validity.

Now she never would.

**********

The great cat stood over her, rumbling angrily at Jubilee. Daniel got
up from her where the tumble had left her and hugged the cat happily.

"Oh, Tyger, you came." She burried her face in his ruff, "Thank you."

Jubilee just stood there... Staring.... The sparklies trailed off
forgotten. Not much was going through her mind. Everything had sort of shut
down when the tiger, who was the size of a small horse, had appeared out of
thin air.

**********

It might have made her feel better to know that the occupants of the
overhead booth were in the same position. The trio had observed as the fight
escilated, Scott getting more and more jumpy as each insult was thrown, and
the other two watching calmly. Now they had slightly different expressions on.
Scott and Storm turned to look at the Profesor.

"This could be a problem." remarked Xavier as calmly as possible.

EPISODE 2 : Echoes of a Dream
-----------------------------

"Momma?" K.C. asked quizzically, "Wha's de matter?"

**********

Rogue started at K.C. for a few moments in shock. So did everyone
else.

"Y..you're okay." Rogue stammered. "Ah thought.. no nevermind
shugar, it don't matter." She hugged K.C. "Ya jus' scared me tha's
all."

K.C. looked up questioningly. "Did'ya tink 'ah was gonna go ta'
sleep Momma?" The child cocked her head. "Like de bad guys?"

Rogue looked at her blankly. "Bad guys?"

K.C. nodded. "De 'bots, de... Fl..Fal..Fanlax." She paused, "no
de fanax? Falnax."

"The Phalanx?" Xavier asked softly.

K.C. smiled "Yah, Dem."

**********

:K.C. comes from a different reality,: Bird began, and then cocked
his head thoughtfully, :actually from several.: He looked at Logan, but
the X-man didn't react. :Her original reality was much like your own,
but under siege by a robotic entity known as the Phalanx. I believe you
managed to fight them off here, am I right?:

"Far as we know." Logan eyed the bird. "How come you couldn't?"

:For a variety of reasons,: Bird answered, :mostly a run of very
bad luck, but also a fanatical group of humans called Goodlife. They
named themselves after a group in a series of novels by Fred
Saberhagen.:
Bird shuddered, and ruffled his feathers. :They would
_willingly_ give themselves to the Phalanx.:
Logan looked shocked, and
Bird cocked his head. :Our Phalanx is only after mutants. It has
divided the world in two, and for the present mutants, and their
supporters, are on the loosing side.:

"So what's this have to do with the kid?" Logan asked. :If she's
Phalanx this could get messy.:
He thought uneasily.

:I should think not!: Bird chirped angrily. :If you think I would
let _anything_ happen to my Chosen...:

"Chosen?"

Bird sighed, and preened a wing. :Perhaps I'd better explain that
first.:
He looked over at Logan. :As you've probably guessed I'm not
your normal species...:

**********

"..den Momma didn' come back an 'ah went lookin' fer her." K.C.
finished up her recitation of her short, but unique life. "an' now
I found ya!" She yawned. "But followin' Bird s'hard, 'n ah'm tired."

"The mockingbird led you here?" Beast asked, a little amazed.

K.C. nodded. "He Danced tha way fer me." she answered sleepily.
"He's mah Dancer, ah'm suppose't follow 'im, or ah'd get lost." She
curled up into Rogue's arms and fell asleep.

Rogue stood very carefully, so not to wake K.C. "Professor?"

"Why don't you put her in Jubilee's old room." Xavier answered,
"She should be comfortable there." Rogue moved slowly into the Mansion
followed by the remaining X-men.

Storm had noticed when Logan slipped off to follow Bird, but she
had not noticed when Gambit disappeared. :This day has not been kind to
him.:
She thought :Goddess bless, but I can only wonder how he is
taking it.:
She lifted off the ground borne by a quietly summoned
zephyr. :Perhaps he might benefit from a sympathetic ear...:

**********

:...So,: Bird concluded, :that's your basic Dreamer-Dancer
background info. Anything you have questions on?:

"You said Dreamers die before they can cross realities, so is the
kid...?"

:K.C. is a.... special, case.: Bird answered. :Which if you'd let
me finish my story...:
He glanced at Logan, who leaned back against the
tree trunk.

"Be my guest."

Bird nodded. :K.C. was born to our realities Rogue, but as far as
anyone can tell, she is not a mutant herself.:
Logan raised an eyebrow.
:As I said,: the mockingbird hastened to explain, :she gets her
telepathy as an offshoot of the bond, but her resistance to Rogue's
powers is something our world was never able to figure out.:

**********

:Gambit,: Remy thought to himself, :you be one sorry mutant, ne?:
He sighed. :You be jealous of a _kid_.: He scooped an acorn up off the
ground. :An awful jealous at dat.: He charged the acorn, and
absentmindedly watched it glow.

"I feel sorry for the poor squirrel who comes across that acorn."
Storm commented as she stepped into view.

"Hey Stormy," Gambit responded, while releasing the charge. "you
tink I would hurt de poor animals?" He looked at the acorn for a moment
before tossing it away. "Non, I been saving it for Cyclops." He smiled
bitterly. "Don' you tink he would appreciate it?"

"No more than you would appreciate another one of his `control-your
-hormones' lectures.' Storm answered, smiling. "But that is not why I
came." She looked at Gambit for a moment. "I came to talk about the
child."

**********

"Cerebro can't tell?" Logan asked skeptically.

:There is no Cerebro in our world, it was assimilated almost
immediately.:
Bird responded. :And we have not been in an X-man/mutant
reality since.:

"How many places you been?"

:Seventeen,: Bird answered tiredly. :and this is the first in
which Rogue has existed. Just my luck we end up practically in her
lap.:
Bird sighed. :Why can't my Chosen act like other Weavers...:

"Just tell her you aren't going to go." Wolverine offered. "After
all she can't leave without you."

:Yes, but she would.: The mockingbird answered. :She doesn't care
if she gets lost. Do you know how hard it is explaining eternity to a
nine year old?:
He ruffled his feathers. :As I was saying, K.C. was
born to our reality's Rogue, and when her mother disappeared she came
looking for her.:

"Disappeared?"

:Rogue was part of a resistance effort, and was reported MIA after
one mission.:
Bird sighed. :K.C. was five at the time, needless to say
she took it badly. That was when she decided that her Momma had simply
gotten `lost', so K.C. went looking for her. It was her determination
rather than death-shock that let her switch realities.:

"What about the Knlir?" Logan asked. "You said someone was
following you."

Bird bobbed his head. :Yes I did, unfortunately it is already
here...:

Tada! A new series, and one I hope people will like. This story is
about a 9 year old child who can do some rather interesting things.
Including turning the X-mansion into a giant daycare center. But its
all for a good cause...right?

And now to confuse all DreamWeaver-addicts... this story is set in same
universe/world! But please do not assume that what applies to Daniel,
applies to K.C.

EPISODE 1 : Songs of Silence
----------------------------

It was a clear and cloudless day, and Rogue was once again up on
the roof, attempting to figure out just where life had gone wrong.

:Remy...ya dolt. Why couldn' ya leave well enough alone?: She
hugged her knees to her chest. :Someday yur gonna push too far, then
what?:
Staring at the roof, Rogue watched mindlessly as the first few
raindrops hit the sun-baked tiles. Then it connected. :Rain?: She
released her knees and glanced up at the sky. The previous clear blue
expanse was hidden in a swarm of angrily billowing stormclouds.

:Fits mah mood.: Rogue noted and stood, preparing to go for a
little cloud-dance. At the very least it should help her get her mind
off Remy. :'Ah'll have t' thank Storm latter..: But before she could
leap off, several things happened all at once.

The sudden storm climaxed in a barrage of lightning strikes...

The warning claxons in the mansion went off...

And a quiet voice from behind her asked, "Momma?"

**********

Rogue stared at the kid who had suddenly appeared on the roof. The
child stared back.

"Momma?" The child was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, her light-
brown hair cut short, and her golden eyes wide and scared. A grey-brown
mocking bird, perched on her right shoulder, eyed the spandex-clad
X-man warily. Rogue realized she was staring and reached out a hand.

"Hush shugar, it's okay, but I ain't yer mama." The child grabbed
her offered hand, oblivious to Rogue's denial. The mockingbird chirped
annoyed as it was unceremoniously dislodged from its perch.

"Momma." The child proclaimed happily, as it wrapped its arms
around the startled X-man. "Don' never leave me 'gain..."

**********

Rogue was still attempting to deal with what had happened, as she
gently lowered the two of them onto the ground. She looked over at the
assembled X-men, most of whom were still gearing down from the Code
Red. She gave Xavier a helpless look, and the Professor moved over.

"'Ah...She..." Rogue attempted to explain, then gave up. Xavier
smiled.

:I see. She seems have formed an attachment to you, do you know
what she was doing on the roof?:
he asked.

"'Ah fell fr'm de sky." The child answered him. "An' 'ah found mah
Momma, been lookin' soooooo long." She smiled. Xavier and Rogue
recovered quickly.

"You fell from the sky?" Xavier asked. The child nodded. "And you
think Rogue is your mother?" The child looked a little offended.

"Don' tink, _know_." The rest of the X-men had slowly maneuvered
their way over towards the threesome. Logan was grinning.

"You done somethin' the rest of us ought to know about?" Rogue
glared at him. Storm was looking at the child, with a fascinated gaze.

"That is the child that caused this storm?" Rogue looked at her.

"Ya mean, ya didn' do this?" She waved at the fast evaporating
clouds. Storm shook her head. The mockingbird chose that moment to
return, it chattered at the child scoldingly, as it settled back on her
shoulder. The girl grimaced.

"What's the matter child?" Xavier asked.

"He say she ain't ma right Momma, an' dat I gotta go." The child
glared at the bird. "Not gonna." The bird chirped. "No." It puffed up
its chest and glared back with a shiny black eye. "Uh-uh." The bird
looked like it was about to explode. "Go 'way"

"Um, shugar" The child looked up at Rogue, "tha bird c'n talk?"
The child nodded vigorously. "Does't have a name?" The child nodded
again.

"Bird." Rogue looked at Xavier, he shrugged. Rogue turned back to
the girl.

"Its name's Bird?" The girl nodded.

**********

:This is not where you belong: Bird snapped. :and you know it!:

:All 'ah know's Ah've found Momma.:

:She is not your mother. Not here, not anywhere.:

:She is!:

:She is not. You were wrong to come here, and you know it.:

:Go Away!:

**********

The mockingbird shot from the child's shoulder into the sky, and
was gone into the nearby woods in seconds. The girl burst into tears,
and clung to Rogue in a death grip.

"You won' leave me. Say you won' leave me!" Rogue looked down at
the child and gave in.

"Alright shugar, Ah'll stay, you c'n stay...shush darlin'" Rogue
knelt and hugged the girl. She tilted the tear stained face up to meet
her own. "You got a name shugar?" The child nodded.

"K.C." She responded smiling, :'Ah home, Ah don' care wha' Bird
says, ah'm home...:

**********

Logan tracked the bird into the woods, and waited silently until
it had settled, before he moved into view. The bird cocked its head
and looked at the X-man with a shinny black eye. Logan looked up
quietly for a few moments and then spoke.

"You smell like a sparrow." The bird ruffled its feathers and
glared at him indignantly. "You do." The bird hopped down the branch
towards Wolverine. "Nope. Now you smell like a cardinal." The bird
flipped its wings, and glared. "That's a chickadee." The mockingbird
flew down to a lower branch, half a foot from Logan's head. He sniffed
thoughtfully. "That's the right species, but the should be the
northeastern subspecies, not the western."

:I would love to know, where you get off telling me what I should
or should not smell like!:
The bird chirped angrily. :A bird is a
bird.:

"What are you normally?" Logan asked. The bird shot up into the
air and circled his head menacingly, before settling down again.

:What! I ought to..! You!:

"Well, it's obviously not a mockingbird."

:No..well alright, it's not. I'm normally a red-tailed hawk, but
there are laws against that here...:

"Or at least against nine year-olds owning them." Logan noted as
he gave the bird a measuring glance. "What's the deal with the kid?"
The mockingbird drooped.

:Sasha may have my head for this, but how much worse can it get?
I'm a _prey_ species for Gods' sake!:
it ruffled its feathers. :You
may want to sit down...it's a long story.:

**********

:'Ah jus' agreed 't take care 'o a child I never seen before.:
Rogue noted, a little overwhelmed. :'Ah must be crazy!: She looked
down at K.C.'s shinning face. :Well.. maybe not.: Rogue was just about
to get up, when K.C. reached a hand up to touch her cheek. Rogue
flinched, but to late to prevent the skin to skin contact. Time seemed
to stand still as Rogue's mind panicked.

:Not again, dear God not again...: she cried silently as she
waited for the flood of memories. It never came.

"Momma?" K.C. asked quizzically, "Wha's de matter?"

EPISODE 2 : Living Shadows
_________________________________________________________________________

"Rahne, Pace. Pace, Rahne." Jean noted as she headed towards her
room. "You should get along perfectly."

**********

"Ye gotta dog?" Rahne asked, confused.

::Dog?:: Pace responded, ::I should _hope_ not.::

"Told you." Came an unimpressed voice from the den. "This is what
we get for living with a Superhero."

"I am _not_ a Superhero," Jean complained as she reappeared, "I am
a mutant, the two are not the same thing."

"It talks?" Rahne asked, giving Pace a worried look. "Are ye sure
ye were thinkin' when ye picked this critter up?"

::Excuse me,:: Pace yelped, ::but I am _not_ a critter! I am a
North American Timber Wolf, and I wish for once people would not assume
I am a dog!::

"Well, this should solve our squirel problems." Carter commened,
refusing to leave the den.

"A wolf?" Rahne looked at Pace a little startled. "But ye don't
_look_ like a wolf."

::Thanks.::

"Well _I'm_ not going to argue with it." Carter delcaired. "It can
call itself a Norwiegen Elkhound for all I care. Anyone seen the
remote?"

"It's undernieth the sofa." Jean noted, as she headed into the
kitchen that lay in a recess in the cabin's wall.

::So what should I look like?:: Pace asked, as Rahne continued to
eye him suspiciously.

"Like an Irish wolf I'd suspect." Jean interupted. "Large, red, and
Irish."

::I don't look good in red.::

"Ye can change yer coat?" Rahne asked, her curiosity replacing her
suspicion. "I canna do that!"

::Huh?::

:She's a werewolf you dope.: Jean noted, as she attemped to find
something to eat. "You guys _did_ go shopping while I was gone?" She
asked as she searched.

"For food?" Carter replied, "Why?"

Jean sighed, and retreaved a box of Pop-tarts from the back of the
cabinet. "I'm suprised there are any squirels left in the woods as it
is."

::A werewolf?:: Pace was now staring at Rahne.

"Ye canna tell?" she asked, a little confused. "I thought.."

"What, you can't smell it?" Carter asked, actually leaning around
the corner. "I would've thought that was a dead giveaway."

::Oh.:: Pace looked a little embarrased. ::I wasn't really paying
attention to that, I normaly don't.::

Rahne looked at him oddly, "How? I canna _help_ but smell."

::It's a little complicated...::

**********

It was nearing nightfall as Pace finished up his explination of
Dancers, Dreamers, and the Knlir. The run-down had taken a few hours, and
Jean had retreated into her bedroom. Carter was dividing her attention
between Pace and X-files, so Rahne was the only one left paying any real
attention to the lecture/explination.

::So I can smell and all,:: Pace shrugged, ::but I don't normally
pay attention. There didn't seem to be much point.::

Rahne gave him a dissaproving look. "So ye took this form without
a hint 'o what it meant? "

Pace cocked his head. ::Huh?:: He asked, a little lost.

"I mean ye've never read 'bout wolves, nor run with a pack, nor
even bothered to test tha boundries 'o yer form."

Pace shurged and nodded. ::I can't read.:: He offered in
explination.

"I thought as much." Rahne sighed. "Let me tell ye a little bit
'bout meanings..." She leaned back aginst the wall. "I wan'na always
the well adjusted werewolf ye see before ya," she remarked, a little
sarcasticaly, "n'fact I t'was even more messed up than ye, if that's
possible."

::Thanks.::

"I was livin' with a preacher, who was positive I was dammed ta
hell fer bein' a werewolf, and tried 'is best ta 'save' me." Rahne
grimiced. "An 'e had me convinced too." She glanced towards Jean's
bedroom. "But that was when Jean came 'long, she could feel me mind,
an tha way it'd been torn up inside...so she talked me inta runnin'
away with her. God knows what woulda happen had she nay come by."

Pace looked at her for a moment, and then smilled. ::Hellfire
and Dalmations?::
He asked, and then ducked as she threw a nearby
couch pillow at him.

"I shoulda known better than ta trust a wolf." She sighed.

:I thought _you_ were a wolf.: Pace teased, dodging a sudden barage
of pillows.

"I'll give ye wolf." Rahne mock-snarled and downshifted. Pace
froze as Rahne's form shifted and melded into that of a large, red, Irish
wolf.

:How?: Pace managed to ask, before Rahne bowled him, over.

::I'ma werewolf,:: she growl-barked, ::an ye have just given me
cause ta call a game of tag!::
There were acompaning groans from Jean and
Carter, as they heard Rahne's thought.

"Tag?" Carter asked, "In the middle of X-files?"

Rahne wagged her tail. ::An' Carter's It!:: With that the small, yet
amazingly diverse household was plunged into a frantic game of twilight
tag. Rahne and Pace had the advantige of slightly better night-sight, and
the game quickly moved outdoors. Jean managed to keep track of everyone
through mindscans, but it was Carter who quickly ruled the game.

::Where?:: Pace asked, as Carter one again dissipeared from sight.

::She's a Hunter.:: Rahne explained, leaving Pace more confused
than before he'd asked.

::What's a..:: but his thought was cut off as Carter suddenly
appeared from behind them.

"Tag!" she yelled triumphantly, and bapped Rahne. Pace and Carter
bolted, leaving the werewolf to count to seven.

::What's a Hunter?:: Pace asked Carter, as the two attempted to
vanish into the woods. ::Are you a mutant?::

Carter shook her head, "Nope. I'm a.. well.. Hunter." She shrugged
"It's hard to explain, but I'm basically a well trained Were-killer."
That brought Pace to a compleate stop.

::A What?!::

Carter laughed. "Relax, I'm not trying to kill Rahne. There are
two kinds of weres in the world. I kill one of them." The conversation
was once again interupted, this time by Jean, as she expertly tagged
Pace.

::And I thought _Sasha_ was hard to get info out of...:: He
complained, then counted to seven and rejoined the fight.

**********

It wasn't until several months later that Pace managed to pin
Carter down and extract an explination.

:I'm getting tired of this.: The Dancer snarled.

"Alright." Carter finaly gave up. "If you want to know so bad, then
here it is. I told you I was a Were-killer, right?"

:Yes.: snapped Pace, :and that's _all_ you've told me.:

"I still don't see why you need to know." Carter complained, "but
far be it from me to refuse the mighty Dancer anything." Pace glared at
her, and she shrugged. "There are two kinds of weres in the world. The
first are those that're genetic, like Rahne. Where the person is born a
were, and so are their children. Then there are those that have
contracted the desease." Pace looked compleatly unconvinced. Carter
sighed, and glared at him. "I kill the second kind, it's a mercy killing
at that point anyways. They get it the same way people get AIDS, only
it's a lot more deadly. Most people who are bitten, or contract it go mad
very _very_ quickly."

:Why?:

Carter looked at him. "Why? Think about it. You have your basic
run-of-the-mill human, and suddenly they're changing into a wolf at
stressful moments. That doesn't normaly bring out the best in people."

:But how can you tell?: Pace asked suspiciously.

"This.' Carter responded, and pulled a small medalion out from
benith her shirt. It was a silver cirle, with an eye-twisting black
wolf pawprint in the middle. Pace looked at the medalion, and then
quickly away.

:What is that?: He asked, after a moment.

"It's a Warning." Carter answerd. "It vibrates when anyone with the
desease comes within forty feet, if I'm lucky that's normaly enough
time." She return the medalion to its hiding place. "Of course the weres
can feel it too, so it pays to be quick."

:Who made that?: Pace asked, trying not to look at the spot where
the medalion lay hidden.

"There are one hundred of them, and they were all made by my five
times great-grandmother. They've been handed down the bloodlines, and
each firstborn is trained to use them." She sighed. "I'm third-born, but
they got both of the twins. So now it's just me." She looked speculativly
over at the Dancer. "So I'm not going to hurt Rahne, you can relax now."

:I'm not..: Pace begain, but Carter cut him off.

"I'm not blind. Neither is Rahne, as far as I know."

**********

Pace spent the next two months avoiding Rahne, or at least as much
as was possible in a three bedroom cabin in the middle of nowhere. It
was more than obvious to everyone that something was bothering the
Dancer, but Pace refused to talk.

:I couldn't be that obvious.: Pace grumbled silently to himself.
:Carter's just trying to annoy me.: That train of thought worked for all
of two minutes. :Dammit, what if she's right.: He pondered mournfuly.
:Maybe it's time I left..: That thought was interupted by the appearnce
of Rahne. :Hello.: he noted, without much enthusiasm.

"Hi." Rahne leaned up against the wall, and sank into a sitting
position opposite the wolf. Pace concentrated on his forepaws. "Your
nay talkin' ta me." Rahne complained quietly. "Why?"

:It's nothing.:

Rahne glared at the Dancer. "If it t'were nothin' then why aren't
ye talkin' ta me?" She snapped. Pace winced, and his ears drooped.

:I...:

"Ferget it." Rahne snapped, downshifted, and ran out the cabin door,
leaving the Dancer, startled out of his self-pity.

:Rahne!: He barked after her. :Wait!:

**********

:Damn wolf.: Rahne snarled to herself, as she ran silently through
the woods. :Shouldna thought 'e needed help, 'e won't even _talk_ ta
me.:
She skirted a stream, and lept over the scattered fox traps she had
sprung the night before. :He won't even tell me what I did wrong!: She
growled angrilly, as she lept up the tumbled boulders to her favorite
thinking spot. She upshifted as she reached the top, and leaned back
against the gigantic oak that seemed to have grown for just that
purpose. :I canna understand him.: She complained silently. :I dinna
think he _hated_ me.:
Rahne closed her eyes, and concentraed on the
warmth of the midday sunbeams. :It's nay fair...:

**********

:Dammit.: Pace growled, as he attempted to track Rahne's passage
through the forest. :She doesn't _understand_.: he lamented silently.
:What am I supposed to do? Trot up and tell her? Damnit, she's _not_
my Dreamer.:
the Dancer snarled. But Dreamer or not, Pace could feel
Rahne's distress and anger through the tentative link that had formed
between them. :It's not fair...:

**********

Pace tracked Rahne through the woods, snarling impatiently as he
lost the trail again and again. :And here I thought I was getting
better at this sort of stuff,:
he grumbled. :Nothing better to remind
you of your place on the Path.:
He nosed around the trees until he
found the track. :I didn't want to do this again!: Pace complained
silently as he ran.

**********

Rahne relaxed against the tree. :I should nay have run. 'E would
ha' tol' me if...:
She sighed. :Then again 'e might have run off.
T'would be like him ta run.:
A faint wind wound its way through the
trees. :I's so peaceful.:

But there was something burrowing into her train of thought. A
patch of 'not me' feelings of worry, and frustration. Rahne frowned as
she tried to identify them. :Jean?: But these thoughts didn't feel like
the link Jean keep between the cabin-mates. Rahne cocked her head and
chased the feelings around her mind. The chase ended abruptly as they
spiked in a flash of pain.

**********

:YOWCH!: Pace yelped, as the jaws of the trap closed around his
foreleg. :PainPainPainPain!!!!: He scrambled to a halt, his wounded
leg tucked up under him. :Itcan'thurtme!?: He kiyi-ed as realised what
ad caught him. :I'mDancer. Can'thurtme!: He whined, his brain attempting
to deny the pain. :Notreal!: His foot was a bleeding testiment to the
opposite. :IwantOUT!: he howled in panic.

**********

Rahne was off the rock and in wolf-form before her thoughts caught
up with her. :Pace?: Pain was flooding into her mind, and she limped
unconciously. :Where?: She shook her head, and pushed the pain away
until she could think again. In answer Pace's howl echoed through the
woods. :That solves where.: She noted, as she headed for the spring.
:Now I only need what, how, an' why...: She smilled grimly as she
bounded to the rescue.

**********

:painpainpainpain: Pace whined as Rahne loped into sight. She
slowed down, and carefully searched the clearing. Her search uncovered
two more traps, which she upshifted and removed.

"Tha' trapper is good." She noted, as she piled the new wolf traps
on top of the fox traps. "'E mus' ha' seen me tracks 'n set these."

:PAIN!: Pace objected.

"Ye've seen litle, if ye think _that_ hurts." Rahne commented
and knelt beside the whimpering wolf. "Hol' still." She warned as she
tried to work the trap loose.

:painpainpainWatchOut!: Pace yelped as someone hurried through
the brush towards them. Rahne turned in time to catch the hastily
thrown deadfall.

"Hey! What the hell do you think your doing?" roared the trapper
as he came in sight. "That pelt's worth six at least!" He waved the
rifle at her threataningly. "Get the hell away from that, it's _mine_."

Rahne smilled. "No. He. Isn't." She snarled at the trapper, who
glared back.

The trapper flipped off the safety on the rifle. "Huntin' acidents
are a real shame. You wouldn't want to get caught in one, now would you?"
He leveled the rifle at Rahne. "Now ditch the stick and get lost."

:Rahne!: Pace yelped, his pain forgotten :Leave! You're not
imortal, you don't have a healing factor, and I'm certainly no E.M.T.!:

:I'm _not_ leavin' ye.: Rahne snarled back across the link.
:Unless 'o course ye _wanna_ be someone's rug.:

The trapped waved the rifle. "I'll shoot you."

"Ye c'n try." She growled, and leapt for him, downshifting as she
moved.

"Holy shit!" The trapper yelped and fired blindly at the incoming
wolf. Rahne grunted as the bullet skimmed her shoulder, and plowed into
the panicing human.

"Our Father who art in Heaven.." mumbled the trapper as he fell under
the wieght of the wolf, the gun tumbling from his hand. "Hallowed be
thy name..."

:Rahne don't!: Pace barked, hopping to the end of his chain.

:He deserves it.: She snarled back.

"Thy kingdom come.."

:_Think_ Chosen, how many wolves are there in West Virginia?: Pace
pleaded.

:None.: She growled back.

"Thy will be done..."

:Two.: was Pace's frigid reply. :Don't hurt him.:

"On Earth as it is in Heaven..."

Rahne was silent for a moment, and then stepped off the trapper.

"Give us this day our daily bread..."

:Chosen?: She asked softly.

"And forgive us our trespasses..."

:Kendor soln, kendar kototh.: Pace answered, and for the first
time he understood what Sasha meant.

"As we forigve those who trespass against us..."

:Kendar kototh, kendor Kendass.: Rahne responded, the formal
phrases falling from Pace's mind into her own.

"Lead us not into temptation..."

:Chosen.: Pace bowed his head. :Thank you.:

"But deliever us from evil..."

Rahne moved to his side, limping slightly from the bullet wound.
:Promise me you won't do this again.:

Pace smilled, then winced. :Not willingly Chosen, not willingly.:

"The kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours..."

Rahne quickly un-hinged the trap, and threw it next to the
petrifyed human. :Live and let die.: She snarled.

:You are _not_ James Bond...: Pace noted, limping away from the
spring.

"Now and forever..."

:Can you make it home?: Rahne asked, worridly.

:Can you?:

:I guess we'll have to find out the hard way...:

"Amen." When the trapper opened his eyes the wolves were gone. He
scrambled to his feet, grabbed his gun, and bolted back to his truck.
:Jesus.: He swore, :_No one's_ gonna belive this one...:

And they didn't.

**********

:Do ye still miss Chris?: Rahne asked, as she curled up next to
him. The Dancer looked over from the season premire of X-files.

:This show is addicting.: He complained.

:Answer the question.: Rahne mock-snarled. :An' it's yer own fault
th' show's addicting.:
She glanced at the screen. :If ye would stop
with th' 'I seen that!', 'I been there!', 'I know 'im!'. I's only a
show.:

:Hrmph.: Pace snorted, and then looked over at her. :Yes.:

:Yes, ye'll stop with the comments, or yes ye miss Chris?:

:I miss Chris.: Pace sighed. :He was half my soul.: He nudged
Rahne as she looked down. :You are another half, a different half,
love. But I still miss him.:

:I know.: Rahne looked up at him. :But i's been five years. C'n
ye not put it behind ye?:
she nudged him. :Ye canna spend the rest 'o
yer life mourning 'im.:

:I try Chosen, I try.:

:Hmph.: Rahne snorted.

:Was there a point to this conversation?: Pace asked, his thoughts
drawn back to Chris's death.

:I need ye, an' I need ye ta be _here_ with me, and not in the
past with Chris.:

Pace looked at her sharply. :Why?:

Rahne sighed. :I canna raise th' cubs alon'...:

:Raise what?!:

Rahne smilled, :Kendor soln, Chosen... Life goes on.:

**********

Rahne smilled maternaly down on the rolly-poly balls of fuzz, as
they attempted to chew her tail off.

::I canna see why anyone would go to such trouble for just _one_ wee
bairn.::
She commented to Jean.

"Amazingly enough most people would rather only have to _deal_ with
one of them." The redhead answered as she scooped a random cub, up off
the floor. It yipped in indignation, and attempted to squirm loose. "Do
they have names yet?"

"It's only been a _year_," Carter called from the den. "No. Wait.
Lemme guess... you "have to wait for the personalities to surface",
right?"

Rahne shook her head. ::Actually their due for names any day now.
So, unless ye want t' call them Spot, Mask, and Paws, which was Pace's
sugesstion, ye'll have to wait.::
She smilled ::Although he may have'n
idea....::

"So this one is Mask, I take it?" Jean asked, distracting Rahne from
that particularly sadistic line of thought.

::Actually, I think that's Spot.:: Pace commented as he stepped onto
the porch. The cub growled at him, and Jean let it loose to attack. Pace
attempted to ignore it as the cubling defened her honor by knawing on
the Dancer's tail. ::I'm not going to have a tail _left_ by the time
they actually get teeth.::
He complained, as he moved over to Rahne's
side, dragging the cub in his wake. ::You don't seem to be fairing much
better love.::
He noted.

::Well, now that you're here...:: Rahne trailed off, and gave the
Dancer a wolfish grin. Pace sighed, and reluctantly curled up on the
porch. He was immedeately swamped by the three. Rahne streached, yawning
as she moved for the first time that morning. ::Tis good to be mobile
again.::
She noted. ::As fer names, I think I would call them Shade,::
She nosed a smokey-grey cub, ::Heather,:: she motioned towrds the one
Jean had held, ::and Chris.:: Pace looked up at the last name. :If it's
alright with ye.:
Rahne amended, watching the Dancer quietly. Pace
looked up at her for a moment, and then nodded.

:Thank you.: He replied softly.

**********

Pace was relaxing on the porch, pondering over his cub problems,
when he felt the touch of another mind. Pace lifted his head off his
forepaws, and stared into the starlit sky, trying to focus on the voice.

:Pace, where are you? Pace...: It yelled, but very very softly, and
from a distance. :Pace, can you hear me? I will not Judge!: Pace stood,
as he finally recognized the mindvoice.

:Tyger?: He though to himself. :Can it be? But how?:

:I _won't_ Judge, Pace...: Tyger called.

:You cannot help but Judge.: Pace responed, sending his thought
winging through the darkness. :Perhaps you might not have once,: He
thought sadly to himself, :but now? How could anyone, after they met
the cubs...:

:Pace!: Tyger called, :Where...: but his thoughts were interrupted,
and Pace was once again left to himself.

:What happens now?: Pace wondered, and turned to trot back into the
cabin. His past had found him once again.

(End of Episode 2...)

EPISODE 1 : Deathsongs
_______________________________________________________________________

:Heads up!: Pace snarled as he leapt up and over the head of his
startled Chosen. :Dammit Chris _move it_!: He snapped as he diverted
the Knlir's attacks. :Thirteen years without a peep: The wolf snarled
to himself, :and now out of nowhere...: ::GODS!:: He yelped as the
Knlir lashed out a tentacle and slammed him into the opposite wall.

::Mngr. Gnnrm, grsmn.:: The Knlir screamed as it moved after
Chris, who stood frozen with fear.

:Chris!!: Pace whined, as he struggled back onto his feet. :Come
on cubling, _RUN_!!:

**********

"Mon Dieu." Whispered the fourth, and forgotten member of the
confrontation. Gambit was no coward, but when something the size of
and elephant, and kin to some of his worst nightmares, appeared out of
thin air, well...

**********

The Knlir moved in for the kill, Chris motionless and seemingly
dead meat. But as they had so many times in his short life, Chris's
powers came to his rescue, and he dodged the fanatical strikes of the
Knlir.

:Pace?: Chris whimpered through the mindlink, :I.. I can't fight
this...:

:You _have_ to!: Pace howled as he threw himself back into the
fray, :I can't hurt him!! Only you..: The thought was broken as the
Knlir once again redirected it's attention to the Dreamer.

::Mngr. Gnnrm, grsmn!!:: The Knlir screamed over Pace's thought.
^YOU WILL DIE!^ It snarled, at Pace. The wolf leapt out away from the
monster's range, and growled back.

^Brainless coward, you _can't_ kill me^ Pace laughed viciously.
:Although this is gonna hurt like hell tomorrow: ^Wouldn't you like
to Dance?^ He snarled at the intruder.

^Godless scum!^ shrieked the Knlir as it lashed out with one of
it's snakelike heads, ::MGNR!!::

^Don't you wish.^ Pace barked back, as he evaded the blow by a
paw-length. :Come on Chris!: He snapped. :I can't keep this up much
longer!:

**********

Chris stood watching his one and only soulmate dance in, for Pace,
a bloodless battle. For Chris it would be a whole nother fight. :I
can't do this.:
He pleaded silently towards the heavens. :I can't fight
this, somebody... anybody...:
As far as Chris was concerned, he _was_
helpless, his power useful only in defense. :There's no way I'm gonna
live through this,:
he decided a moment later, :and I can't stand here
and watch Pace suffer...:
Chris took a step towards the nightmare.

:I love you Pace.: He though quietly, and stood motionless as the
Knlir accepted the opening and tore him in half.

**********

::Mngr.:: The Knlir snarled mockingly, and vanished.

::Chris...:: Pace limped over to what remained of his Chosen.
::No..:: He whimpered, trying to convince himself it was all a lie,
that his Chosen was still alive. It didn't work.

"Dog?" Gambit asked cautiously, trying to figure out if the large
smokey-gray canine was a threat.

:Dog?: Pace responded vacantly, turning to look at the cajun.

"Mayb' not." Gambit reflect as his gaze met the bottomless yellow
pools of the wolf's eyes.

:Kendor soln, kendar kototh.: Pace whimpered quietly. :Kendor
soln.:
Then he turned, looked sharply at the X-man and then bolted out
of the mansion, leaving behind the body of his Chosen, and a confused
cajun who had just lost the last few minuets permanently from his
memory.

**********

:Sasha?: Pace called into the dark. :Sasha?:

:Pace?: A calm mindvoice answered, :what's the matter?:

:Chris is dead, Sasha.: Pace howled at the star spattered sky.
:I'm _alone_.: The other mindvoice was silent for a moment.

:You know what you need to do Pace,: Sasha replied quietly.

:No..: Pace shuddered, :I can't.: He looked down at the leaf
covered ground. :Don't ask me to.:

Sasha sighed. :I will not Judge, but I cannot tell the others
unless...:

:I can't.: Pace replied. :I couldn't ever do this again. I
_failed_ him Sasha, if I'd been quicker, if I'd had more time...:

:Kendor soln.: Sasha snapped cutting him off.

:How would _you_ know?: Snarled Pace, :You've never...: but Sasha
had broken contact. :lost anyone...: he finished softly. :You made the
rules Sasha, but the rules are wrong.:

**********

That had been over a year ago, and Pace had not attempted to
contact Sasha again. :Life goes on.: He grumbled angrily, :Yeah,
right.:
He had spent the last year roaming the confines of Yellowstone,
and enjoying the park's wolf protection laws. :Give the tourists their
money's worth.:
He thought as he scented a hiker on the trail ahead.
:Lesse,: he scanned the trail, :'bout here should do it.: He hopped
onto a large rock, far enough from the trail to look harmless, but
close enough to look suitably majestic. The hiker rounded the corner
and stopped as it spotted the wolf. :What'a redhead!: Pace smiled, if
his years with Chris had taught him anything, it was how to rate the
human female.

:Thanks...: The redhead replied. :I think.:

**********

After a quick, if explanation ridden, introduction, Pace joined
Jean as she hiked back towards her campsite.

"So your taking a rest before you go home?" Jean asked, as she
worked her way across a rocky stream bed.

:No...: Pace replied, :I'm not going home.: The quiet resignation
was twined through the wolf's telepathy. Jean looked at the canine
quizzically.

"Why not? Or is that getting too personal?" Jean asked.

:They would not... appreciate it if I came back as I am.: Pace
attempted to explain. :After your Chosen dies, you're expected to
follow customs that I would rather not..:
he trailed off.

"You don't mean they want you dead?" Jean responded, looking over
at the wolf, while attempting to keep her balance on the slippery rocks.

:Not literally,: Pace answered, :but I could no longer be Pace, who
I've been for most of my lifetime.:

"Who would you be?" Jean asked, free of the stream's grasp, and
her curiosity engaged.

:Whoever my new Dreamer needed me to be.:

"I can see why you're not in a hurry to get back."

**********

They reached Jean's camp an hour or so later, and a fast, but
sturdy friendship had formed between the two.

:Would you like me to hunt up a rabbit or something?: Pace offered
as he saw Jean setting up for dinner. She made a face.

"Ick. No thank you mister blood-and-gore, I'm a strict vegetarian.
How can you possibly eat those poor defenseless critters?" She demanded
half-seriously.

Pace cocked his head, :'cause they taste good?: Jean laughed and
dug around in her backpack for dinner.

"I should make you eat tofu for that one." She mock-threatened.

:Tofu?:

**********

Pace looked at the plate Jean had set before him with the same
trepidation he would have focused on a skunk.

:So,: He tried desperately to change the subject, :You were an
X-man?:

"You aren't getting away _that_ easily," Jean countered, "and yes
I was, the significant word being `was'."

Pace grumbled, but took a tentative bite of the mixture in front of
him. It was nowhere close to a rabbit, but he finally decided it didn't
taste as bad as he had expected.

:What happened?: He managed to ask while inhaling the food.

"You better hurry," Jean remarked sarcastically, "it might get
away." Pace had the good grace to look guilty, and slow down. "Well
it's nice to know _some_ things hold true no matter _what_ species.."
she sighed, and leaned back against a tree. "What happened? Well, I
was the only female in an all male team, if that's any clue."

:Owch.: Pace winced in sympathy.

Jean nodded, "And of course I got stuck with a real _nice_ bunch
of males at that." She ticked off the fingers of one hand. "First there
was Logan and Scott who kept trying to kill each other, all for love
of me." She growled sarcastically. "Then there was Beast, and Magneto
who seemed to be the _only_ sane ones, which I suppose balanced out
ShatterStar and Colossus who were positive that I would never be more
than a liability." She sighed angrily. "I wanted to seriously hurt
them sometimes." She glanced over at the wolf. "I guess I'm boring you
with my complaining."

:That's what I'm here for.: Pace half-teasingly. Jean looked at
him silently for a moment.

"Don't suppose I can talk you into a 'it-followed-me-home'
routine" she asked.

Pace looked around him, thinking back to the emptiness that had
dogged him since Chris's death. :I'm tired of being lonely: he thought
to himself, and turned back to Jean. ::Be happy to.:: He answered with
a tail wag.

**********

:Sasha?: Pace called into the night sky. :Sasha, I _know_ you can
hear me.:

:So?: The mindvoice answered. :Is that supposed to make me feel
guilty?:

:Of course.: Pace answered sarcastically.

:So are you coming back yet?: Sasha asked quietly.

:No.: Pace glanced back to where Jean was sleeping. :But I'm not
alone anymore.:
There was a pause.

:I happy for you Pace, I really am.:

:Thanks.:

**********

"So here we are." Jean announced as the bright blue Jeep pulled
up in front of a small, but nice little house.

:I still can't believe you live in West Virginia.: Pace noted as
he hopped out of the jeep. :I keep waiting for people with shotguns to
jump out of thin air and yell 'Kill it!':

Jean laughed. "Nope, sorry but the only people you're gonna see
are my two roommates, and as far a I know neither one of them would
_need_ a gun."

:That makes me feel _so_ much better:

"Anybody home?" Jean yelled as she grabbed her backpack out of the
jeep and headed through the front door.

"Ahm' right here." Came a voice from the den, followed by a teen
dressed straight from an L.L.Bean catalog. "Woah. What's with the
Canis Lupus?"

"Carter, this is Pace. Pace, Carter." The wolf looked at the girl,
she looked back.

:Huh.: Pace finally replied, :I'm a little large for a lupus, no?:

"Great. A talking dog." She answered and retreated back into the
den. "I swear you attract weird stuff Jeanie."

"Weird stuff?" Came another, highly accented voice, "ye'r kidding
right?" Rahne rounded the corner and came face to face with Pace.

"Rahne, Pace. Pace, Rahne." Jean noted as she headed towards her
room. "You should get along perfectly."

(End of Episode 1...)

Shadows of a Dream : Book I : Chapter 6 : Blood Ties

(Reality A66712 : Four months, three weeks past...)

The forest surrounding the Mansion was quiet in the twilight, most inhabitants having abandoned the woods in favor of safer homes. One of the more pressing reasons for that exodus sat with his back to an ancient oak tree, throwing acorns.

"Gambit," Remy muttered to himself, "you be one sorry mutant, ne?" He sighed. "You be jealous of a kid," he scooped an acorn off the ground, "an' awful jealous at dat." He charged the acorn and absentmindedly watched it glow.

"And I used to wonder why there were no squirrels, " Storm commented as she stepped into the clearing.

"Hey Stormy." Gambit responded, as he released the charge. "I thought you were wachin' de kid?"

"She is sleeping, and as usual it would take the Goddess herself to wake her." Storm shook her head, "Would that I could sleep so well."

"Join de party den." Gambit motioned to a tree stump, "Company loves misery, no?" He grinned.

"I thought you might want to talk," Storm said as she sat next to the Cajun, "or perhaps simply someone to listen..."

"Momma always said ev'ryone's an angel when they sleep." Rogue murmured to herself, as she watched K.C. from the doorway, "If she could only see me now..." she trailed off sadly. "Ya never miss 'em till their gone."

"Ah keep thinkin' yer a dream, mah angel, Ah keep wondering when you're going to disappear. Ah can' go ta sleep anymore, 'cause Ah'm nevah sure you'll be there when Ah wake up... Ah keep thinking Ah might loose ya..." She wrapped her arms around herself, shivering. "If this is a dream, Ah don't wanna wake up."

"It's only been a week, an' everybody else's actin' like she's been her all her life." Gambit glared at the ground in front of his feet. "Rogue's been cooin' and motherin' all over her, an' we don' even know who she is!"

"Given Rouge's past, what little we know, it is not surprising that she would form such a strong attachment to the child. K.C. is the closest thing to a family she's had for a while."

"What about me?" Gambit objected quietly.

Storm was silent for a moment, as she gazed at the thief.

"I don't know."

"I am beginning to worry about Rogue, Professor." Beast noted, as his pawn took Xavier's rook. "She has not been sleeping much as of late, and she refuses to allow me to examine K.C."

Xavier studied the chessboard for a moment, and then moved a bishop into a position to challenge Hank's king. "Considering the child seems terrified of computers, I'd think the physical can be safely put off for a while."

"But we have no idea who or what this child is!" Beast objected, while switching his king and castle. "Right now, all I know is that the child claims to be Rogue's daughter from another dimension, and that the mockingbird can talk." He gestured, frustrated. "And I can get the bird to sit still either!"

Xavier chuckled and sat back in his hoverchair. "Have you tried asking politely?"

Rogue moved quietly over to K.C.'s bed, and sat in the chair next to her. She stroked the light-brown hair with a gloved hand. "Ah wonder where you really came fr'm, an' who yer mama is. 'Cause if yer really mine..." She looked up as the mockingbird flew into the room, and perched on the headboard. The two looked at each other for a moment, and then the bird ruffled it's wings and cocked it's head.

"Ah wonder if you c'n really talk," Rogue mused, "Or if yer just some pet..."

:I should think not.: Came the offended answer.

"What if she really is Rogue's child?" Storm asked, looking at the tree behind him. "She has to be thinking of the possibility," she paused, "and if she is..."

"Den there be some hope, ne?"

"True, however we known next to nothing about the child, her Rogue may not have had any powers, or may have learned to control them."

"If not?"

"Then we may have the only person immune to her powers," Storm smiled, "and I think that the Goddess must be laughing."

"Den she be laughin' at me too," he sighed. "An' I'm not sure I like dat..."

"So yah do talk." Rogue murmured looking over at the mockingbird, "Ah had wondered..."

:I doubt there's anyone here who hasn't,: the bird snapped back, :But no one ever asks anything around here, they just 'wonder'.: It ruffled it's wings and glared at her. :One wonders how many other 'pets' are waiting to be asked.:

"Well, ya weren't exactly actin' like you had any brains," Rogue objected in an angry whisper, "An' Ah've barely seen ya since ya got here."

:I've been trying to hide our tracks.: the bird sighed, :But it's not working as well as I hoped, the Knlir are only a few weeks behind us. I managed to get another Pair to muddy the backtrail, and if it works we may have enough time.:

"For what?"

:For me to get K.C. out of this dammed reality before she gets killed!: the mockingbird snapped.

"Something is wrong," Xavier paused, "Rogue's broadcasting again." He put down the knight he had been holding, and moved the hoverchair away from the table. "I will be back."

"You just need time to find a way out of check," grinned Hank, as he relaxed back into the chair. "Do you need any assistance?"

"I think not."

There were loud noises in her dream and K.C. stirred as she tried to shut them out. This was a good dream, not like the other dreams, not like the bad dreams that left her shaking. This one was of before, before the slinky black shapes that had shattered her world, and good dreams were something to fight for.

But the loud noises got louder, and she awoke, frowning and rubbing her eyes.

"What do you mean killed!?"

:What does it normally mean? I--:

The mockingbird cut off his retort as K.C. yawned, and reached over to snuggled against Rogue. She hadn't realized the child was awake and the sudden movement took her by surprise. As K.C.'s arms wrapped around her neck, Rogue flinched, but to late to prevent the skin to skin contact. Time seemed to stand still as Rogue's mind panicked.

:Not again, dear God not again...: she cried silently as she waited for the flood of memories. It never came.

"Momma?" K.C. asked quizzically, "Wha's de matter?"

Shadows of a Dream : Book I : Chapter 5 : Rely on the Tyger

(Path of the Gods : Two weeks past...)

The world was empty. There was no noise, no light, no touch, no scent. Daniel tumbled slowly through the emptiness, or at least she assumed she was moving, she couldn't feel a thing. The void echoed with the absence of sound, ringing in a maddening ripples around Daniel's mind.

:HelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelpHelp!:, she screamed soundlessly into the darkness. There was a pause as the ripples reflected and scattered.

:Grmmggggnmnnnmgr?: a voice queried, not breaking the silence, but bending it into words.

Daniel froze, but continued tumbling.

:Grssr?: a pause, :Rssmn?:.

The voice was demanding some sort of answer, and Daniel shrunk further in on herself, trying to hide. It worked with parents and cops, it would work with terrifying voices from the void.

:Gnnnrgm? Mgnr. Grssmn. Gnnrggggm?: the voice snarled, confused. :Grss nngn, rmn.: it faded away and she was left once more in silence.

:Gods.: She let the thought float around, and then followed it with a string of random cursing. :WhereamI?WhyamI?: she tried to move, but she remained locked in the directionless tumble. :IfthisisHevanI'msuing.: Then she laughed, sending noiseless ripples bouncing.

Slowly glittering blue lines began to rise from the darkness, all shades of blue, from a bright pale sky to a ribbon of the sea.

:GreatNowI'mgoingnuts.: Daniel commented. Her thoughts feeling completely detached from reality, like she was floating above the void and looking down amused.

:Hello? Is someone there?: a new voice asked, sounding distant, and a little amazed. Daniel tried to turn and face it, found that it made little difference.

:Echoechoechoecho!: she yelled, then laughed again. :Madmadmadmad...:

:Who are you?:

:DannyDanielDannyDaniel,: she giggled, :Run,runasfastasyoucan!Youcan'tcatchme, I'mtheGingerbreadMan!: with that she dissolved helplessly into hysterical laughter.

:Danny? Danny relax, calm down...: The voice was calm and parental, which caused an even worse spasm of giggling.

:Helpme?Help_me_?: she asked laughing, :Relax?Grown-up,grownold.: She snickered mockingly, :Neverhelp, neverhelp,I know.Iknow!:

:My God.: the other voice sounded worried.

:Tyger,Tygerburningbright,: she chanted giggling, :Intheforestsofthenight...:

:Danny can you follow me? You need to leave here. Danny can you understand me?: now the voice was agitated.

:Whatimmortalhandoreye....: Daniel drifted off, the laughter fading.

:Tyger, Tyger guard my sleep,: another, softer voice rumbled from beside her, :With your strength in safety keep,: it overpowered the bubbles of hysteria, :Tyger, Tyger guide my dreams,: and drew her back down into the void, :Till the stars no longer gleam.:

:Where'd you go?: demanded the first voice worriedly.

:Dreaming,onlydreaming.:

:Do you think you can follow me? I need you to follow me Danny.:

She tried to turn and look at the voice, and to her shock, she did. She looking into nothing, and watched the ripples. She could see where they started, but not what was making them. :Makin'waves,: she headed for the center, :LayonMacDuff!:

The voice followed a navy-blue line back, and down into a glimmering star. Daniel paused on the edge, then mumbled a prayer to whatever God was listening and dove.

(Reality A5542 : Two weeks past...)

There was a sharp jolt and Daniel's eyes snapped open. She was in the middle of some sort of building, but no one was around. The walls were all gleaming white and metal, bringing to mind the septic smell of a hospital.

:Tyger, Tyger guard my dreams...: she thought, :Where am I?:. She stood shakily, and looked around. :This place is enormous!: She tried to remember how she had ended up in a hospital, which is what she finally decided it must be.

:Something's better than nothing, anything's better than nothing.: She wandered along the wall until she came to a corner, and then continued on. :I wonder if I'm dreaming?:

She came to another corner. :I thought TV was supposed to rot your brain, not comics.: She reached another corner, :and baby makes three.: She looked around again. :There have to be doors here someplace.: She continued on. Another corner. She stopped. A nice, if large, square room, with no doors.

She walked into the middle of the room, and glanced around. Still no doors. :'Follow me home' he said. Which means he's still around here somewhere. Time to test theory number one....:

"Alright people this is no Longer FUNNY! " she yelled.

High above her in the control booth, Professor Xavier, Storm, and Cyclops watched silently. At least until Daniel started yelling.

"I think," Storm noted, "that we have a problem." Xavier turned his hover-chair to face the two.

"That is a incredible understatement Storm." He gestured back towards Daniel. "Danny was a problem, but that was back when she was nothing more than a lost O.O.B." Scott looked confused.

"O.O.B.?"

"Out of body," Xavier replied, "but it's no longer that simple. She should not have been able to do that." He pointed to Daniel's now pacing form. "Normal O.O.B.'s leave their corporal body behind. They do not haul it along like so much luggage." He sounded annoyed.

"I'm sure she did not mean it as a personal insult Professor." Commented Storm, smiling. "From what you have told me she is little more than a lost child."

"Or a teleporter," Scott added, "she might have teleported from... wherever, to here."

"But I 'saw' her on the physic plain." Xavier countered. "She would have had to return to her own world to trigger the teleport."

"And know where she was teleporting to." added Storm. "Perhaps--" Storm's response was rudely interrupted by an indrawn breath from Xavier. "Professor?"

Xavier simply pointed into the danger room.

Daniel was facing away from the door, unable to see it through the illusion, and didn't immediately notice the entrance of Jubilee. Jubilee, however, did notice Daniel. The door slid shut with a clanking noise. Daniel spun around to face it and saw Jubilee.

:OhMyGod!It'sherIt'shercan'tbecan'tonlyastoryonlyacomic: she babbled mentally, causing Xavier no end of headaches. Her verbal response was only a little more collected. "Who the hell are you?" Jubilee looked faintly startled.

"I," she replied defensively, "am an X-Man. Who the hell are you?" The two glared at each other for a moment.

"You're insane." Daniel finally announced. "There are no such thing as X-Men, they're a comic book. Who are you really?" Jubilee looked like she was having a small coronary.

"I am Jubilation Lee, an X-Man, and just who do you think you are? This is my house." She snapped, advancing angrily on Daniel.

The trio in the control booth looked a little offended at the "my house" bit, although Storm seemed to think it was funny.

"Don't you think we ought to stop this?" asked Scott.

Xavier raised an eyebrow. "I think Jubilee can take care of herself Scott."

"Against a mutant of unknown powers?"

"She's obviously had no training, or she would have left by now. Or done something other than wander the danger room talking to herself."

Scott sighed, and turned back to watching the conflict. Storm gave Xavier a worried glance, then joined Scott.

:This is just too weird,: thought Daniel. :Where there hell am I?: She watched as Jubilee advanced angrily. :This is getting way outta hand.: She summoned up what courage she had left and confronted her.

"Even if you were an X-man, which you aren't, this ain't your house an' I never asked to come here!" she snarled. "'Sides you're way to old to be Jubes, she stopped growing somewhere around twelve. So, who you supposed to be again?"

"You...you..." Jubilee ran out of words, and her powers picked up where the words left off.

"Oh, shit!" Daniel yelped, ducking the incoming "sparklies" in a rather sloppy tuck-and-roll that would have shamed her gymnastics coach. :Help!:

She ended her roll up against something large and fuzzy...

And snarling.

"Tyger!"

It had started when she was six. That was the year she had gotten her first "Tyger", although it was then carrying the name Kitty. Ever since then she had collected pictures, miniatures, books, videos, anything that had a bengal white tiger on it.

It had risen from a beloved toy, to as close to a totem as Daniel could ever get. From her earliest memories it had always been a protector, and as she grew it transformed from a barrier between her and the dark, to someone who would, and could protect her from anything. She had held tight to the belief that if ghosts, demons, and things-that-go-bump-in-the-dark could exist than it so followed that Tyger could protect her from them. The belief had become so ingrained that she no longer questioned its validity.

Now she never would.

The great cat stood over her, rumbling angrily at Jubilee. Daniel got up from her where the tumble had left her and hugged the cat happily.

"Oh, Tyger, you came." She buried her face in his ruff, "Thank you."

Jubilee just stood there... staring.... The sparklies trailed off forgotten. Not much was going through her mind. Everything had sort of shut down when the tiger, who was the size of a small horse, had appeared out of thin air.

It might have made her feel better to know that the occupants of the overhead booth were in the same position. The trio had observed as the fight escalated, Scott getting more and more jumpy as each insult was thrown, and the other two watching calmly. Now they had slightly different expressions on. Scott and Storm turned to look at the Professor.

"This could be a problem." remarked Xavier as calmly as possible.

Shadows of a Dream : Book I : Chapter 4 : Living Shadows

(Reality A5542 : Six years past...)

Rabbit, fox, tourist... Pace mentally noted the heat signatures of the trails that crossed his own. He had spent the last year roaming the confines of Yellowstone, and enjoying the park's wolf protection laws.

'Mountain to boulder, and boulder to sand', he snorted, the forest shrinks every year... then he stumbled as he realized who he was quoting. Oh Gods, Chris..... the heat signatures vanished as his concentration broke. Kendor soln, he grumbled angrily, Yeah, right.

The sharp crack of branch on the trail brought him back to reality. What? his infra-red snapped back into place, and the hiker glowed through the heavy brush. Better give the tourists their money's worth. It was one of the few things he enjoyed about tourists, normally they just scared off game, now it was payback time.

Lessee, he scanned the trail, 'bout here should do it. He hopped onto a large rock, far enough from the trail to look less than fatal, but close enough to look suitably majestic. The hiker rounded the corner and stopped as it spotted the wolf. ::Boo.:: he thought, and grinned.

:Boo?: came the telepathic response.

The hiker stared at the wolf. Pace, frozen, stared back. Finally the red-head shrugged.

"Fine. Play dumb. I had forgotten all large telepathic wolves were shy. How silly of me." the hiker snapped sarcastically, and resumed her trek down the path.

:Umm.... wait?: Pace recovered enough to lope after her.

"Much better." the hiker nodded, "I was wondering who you had to talk to out here. Or are all the wolves telepaths?"

:Uh, no.:

"What would you have done if I had a gun?"

:They aren't allowed in the park.:

"Poachers?"

Pace dropped back a step, thrown off guard by the rapid questioning. The hiker shrugged and smiled.

"Sorry, I've been on the trail for a week, it tends to kill one's social skills. Can I start over?"

Pace blinked, and shrugged as best he could while keeping up with her ground eating pace.

"Good." She stopped, and he barely kept from running into her. "My name's Jean, what's yours?" she offered a hand.

Pace looked at the offered hand, blinked and then looked up confused. :Pace. You're a telepath.: he noted.

"Telepath, telekentic, tele-whatever." she shrugged again, "all about as useful as having red hair. If you're not a SuperHero, that is."

:Oh.: Somewhere the conversation had stopped making sense, Pace attempted to remember where. :Are you? Xavier talked about a Jean once...:

"Once." she shifted her weight, then looked over at the wolf. "Save that one for when we're sitting down. Speaking of which, I was planning on camping another mile or so in, join me?"

:I take it you ask all telepathic wolves in for dinner?: Pace asked cocking his head and smiling.

"Only the grey ones...."

"So your taking a rest before you go home?" Jean asked, as she worked her way across a rocky stream bed.

:No...: Pace replied, :I'm not going home.: The quiet resignation was twined through the wolf's telepathy. Jean looked at the canine quizzically.

"Why not? Or is that getting too personal?" Jean asked.

:They would not... appreciate it if I came back as I am.: Pace attempted to explain. :After your Chosen dies, you're expected to follow customs that I would rather not..: he trailed off.

"You don't mean they want you dead?" Jean responded, looking over at the wolf, while attempting to keep her balance on the slippery rocks.

:Not literally,: Pace answered, :but I could no longer be Pace, who I've been for the last fourteen years.:

"Who would you be?" Jean asked, free of the stream's grasp, and her curiosity engaged.

:Whoever my new Dreamer needed me to be.:

"I can see why you're not in a hurry to get back."

They reached Jean's camp an hour or so later, and a fast, but sturdy friendship had formed between the two.

:Would you like me to hunt up a rabbit or something?: Pace offered as he saw Jean setting up for dinner. She made a face.

"Ick. No thank you mister blood-and-gore, I'm a strict vegetarian. How can you possibly eat those poor defenseless critters?" She demanded half-seriously.

Pace cocked his head, :'cause they taste good?: Jean laughed and dug around in her backpack for dinner.

"I should make you eat tofu for that one." She threatened.

:Tofu?:

Pace looked at the plate Jean had set before him with the same trepidation he would have focused on a skunk.

:So,: He tried desperately to change the subject, :You were an X-man?:

"You aren't getting away that easily," Jean countered, "and yes I was, the significant word being `was'."

Pace grumbled, but took a tentative bite of the mixture in front of him. It was nowhere close to a rabbit, but he finally decided it didn't taste as bad as he had expected.

:What happened?: He managed to ask while inhaling the food.

"You better hurry," Jean remarked sarcastically, "it might get away." Pace had the good grace to look guilty, and slow down.

"Well it's nice to know some things hold true no matter what species.." she sighed, and leaned back against a tree. "What happened? Well, I was the only female in an all male team, if that's any clue."

:Owch.: Pace winced in sympathy.

Jean nodded, "And of course I got stuck with a real nice bunch of males at that." She ticked off the fingers of one hand. "First there was Logan and Scott who kept trying to kill each other, all for love of me." She growled sarcastically. "Then there was Beast, and Magneto who seemed to be the only sane ones, which I suppose balanced out ShatterStar and Colossus who were positive that I would never be more than a liability." She sighed angrily. "I wanted to seriously hurt them sometimes." She glanced over at the wolf. "I guess I'm boring you with my complaining."

:That's what I'm here for.: Pace half-teasingly. Jean looked at him silently for a moment.

"Don't suppose I can talk you into a 'it-followed-me-home' routine" she asked.

Pace looked around him, thinking back to the emptiness that had dogged him since Chris's death. I'm tired of being lonely, he thought to himself, and turned back to Jean. :Be happy to.: He answered with a tail wag.

:Sasha?: Pace called into the night sky. :Sasha, I know you can hear me.:

:So?: The mindvoice answered. :Is that supposed to make me feel guilty?:

:Of course.: Pace answered sarcastically.

:Are you coming back yet?: Sasha asked quietly.

:No.: Pace glanced back to where Jean was sleeping. :But I'm not alone anymore.:

There was a pause.

:I happy for you Pace, I really am.:

:Thanks.:

Shadows of a Dream : Book I : Chapter 3 : A Wish of the Heart

(Reality A66712 : Five months past...)

It was a clear and cloudless day, and Rogue was once again up on the roof, attempting to figure out just where life had gone wrong.

Remy...ya dolt. Why couldn' ya leave well enough alone? She hugged her knees to her chest. Someday yer gonna push too far, then what? Staring at the roof, Rogue watched mindlessly as the first few raindrops hit the sun-baked tiles. Then it connected. Rain? She released her knees and glanced up at the sky. The previous clear blue expanse was hidden in a swarm of angrily billowing stormclouds.

Fits mah mood. Rogue noted and stood, preparing to go for a little cloud-dance. At the very least it should help her get her mind off Remy. 'Ah'll have t' thank Storm latter.. But before she could leap off, several things happened all at once.

The sudden storm climaxed in a barrage of lightning strikes...

The warning claxons in the mansion went off...

And a quiet voice from behind her asked, "Momma?"

Rogue stared at the kid who had appeared on the roof. The child stared back.

"Momma?" The child was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, her light-brown hair cut short, and her golden eyes wide and scared. A grey-brown mockingbird, perched on her right shoulder, eyed the spandex-clad X-man warily. Rogue realized she was staring and reached out a hand.

"Hush shugar, it's okay, but I ain't yer mama." The child grabbed her offered hand, oblivious to Rogue's denial. The mockingbird chirped annoyed as it was unceremoniously dislodged from its perch.

"Momma." The child proclaimed happily, as it wrapped its arms around the startled X-man. "Don' never leave me 'gain..."

Rogue's thoughts were still flying about randomly as she gently lowered the two of them onto the ground. Only once she had safely deposited the child did she notice the assembled X-men, most of whom were still gearing down from the alarm. She gave Xavier a helpless look, and the Professor moved over.

"'Ah... She..." Rogue attempted to explain, then gave up.

Xavier smiled. "I see."

"That was what set off the alarms?" Bobby asked.

"Your grasp of the obvious seems to be improving," Beast noted, "but perhaps the more pressing question is 'How did she end up on our roof?'"

"'Ah fell fr'm de sky." The child answered him. "An' 'ah found mah Momma, been lookin' soooooo long." She smiled.

"You fell from the sky?" Xavier asked. The child nodded. "And you think Rogue is your mother?"

The child looked a little offended. "Don' tink, know." The rest of the X-men had slowly maneuvered their way over towards the threesome. Logan was grinning.

"You done somethin' the rest of us ought to know about?"

Rogue glared at him.

Storm was looking at the child, with a fascinated gaze. "That is the child that caused this storm?"

Rogue looked at her. "Ya mean, you didn' do this?" She waved at the fast evaporating clouds. Storm shook her head. The mockingbird chose that moment to return. It chattered at the child scoldingly, as it settled back on her shoulder. The girl grimaced.

"What's the matter child?" Xavier asked.

"He say she ain't mah right Momma, an' dat I gotta go." The child glared at the bird. "Not gonna."

The bird chirped.

"No."

It puffed up its chest and glared back with a shiny black eye.

"Uh-uh."

The mockingbird looked like it was about to explode.

"Go 'way"

The mockingbird shot from the child's shoulder into the sky, and was gone into the nearby woods in seconds.

The girl burst into tears, and clung to Rogue in a death grip. "You won' leave me. Say you won' leave me!"

Rogue looked down at the child and then pleadingly at Xavier. He raised an eyebrow. "Alright shugar, Ah'll stay, you c'n stay...shush darlin'" Rogue knelt and hugged the girl. She tilted the tear-stained face up to meet her own. "You got a name shugar?" The child nodded.

"K.C." She responded smiling, "'Ah'm home, Ah don' care wha' Bird says, Ah'm home..."

Shadows of a Dream : Book I : Chapter 2 : Storm Echoes

(Reality R6742 : Two weeks past...)

It was a dark and stormy night. This might have been a truly remarkable experience except for the fact that it had rained non-stop for the past week. One can only appreciate so many dark and stormy nights, so somewhere around Wednesday Daniel had stopped watching the lightning dance, and started watching the floodwaters creep up the hill.

The forecasters swore up and down that the rain would stop any time now, but Daniel watched silently as the denizens of the nearby game reserve migrated towards higher ground. A silent, and soaked, parade of deer, rabbits, raccoons, and now squirrels wound its way through her yard. One of the deer paused as it passed Daniel's window and stared at her for a moment, eyes wide and frightened. She touched a hand to the pane of glass, and the deer turned and bolted. Daniel sighed, and sunk back down onto her bed.

"Damn deer." She snapped at the ceiling. She hadn't been trying to scare it, why couldn't they see that? The answer was the same as it had been yesterday, and the day before... She was human. Humans killed deer. The deer might be a little slow, but they weren't stupid. She glared angrily at the tiger poster above her bed.

"Tyger," she declared, "life is not fair." The tiger declined to respond and she gave up, rolling over and fishing a comic from the pile strewn next to her bed. Spider-Man. "Nope." She tossed it back into the mess, and fished out another. This time it was ElfQuest : The Hidden Years. "Huh, elves. Nope, not in a wolf-ish mood." She dropped the comic back into the chaos and tried again. Ranma 1/2. She paused a moment and flipped through it. "Been there, read that." She released it back into its natural habitat, and actually used _both_ arms to scrounge. X-Men. She flipped through it and rolled back over. "Only read this one seven thousand times. Going for a new world record, drumroll please..." The tiger still neglected to reply from its lofty perch, and silently stared down at her instead. She gave up on it and withdrew into the comic.

Half-way through the comic the lights went out. A few mumbled curses bounced around in the dark as Daniel searched for the flashlight. Had her Mom heard them, she would have been grounded until she died. After locating the flashlight buried among the remains of her clean clothes, she resumed reading, praying that her Mom wouldn't barge in. Which she immediately did.

"Are you alright Danny?" Her mother called from the doorway.

No, thought Daniel, I'm dead. Go away.

"Danny?"

"I'm fine Mom." She finally answered when it became obvious that the intruder was not leaving.

"You could have said so Danny, you had me scared for a moment."

Good, though Daniel, and she waited for her mother to leave. She finally did, and Daniel returned to the comic.

Three and a half comics later, a mournful creak came from the window. Daniel looked over briefly. There was nothing there, even in the evening gloom she could easily see the ancient oak that stood bravely at guard. The last remaining sunlight cast a dancing leaf pattern on the wall. Daniel watched for a little and then went back to reading.

A moment latter the floodwaters wore away the last supporting soil around the roots of the previously mentioned oak. Which immediately came crashing through the wall, tearing the tiger in half, crushing the bed, and compacting most of the room down to the height of a small dog.

Daniel was oblivious to this fact, for her the world had ceased to exist the moment the tree hit the bed.

Shadows of a Dream : Book I : Chapter 1 : DeathSongs

(Reality A5542 : Seven years past...)

:Heads up!: Pace snarled as he leapt up and over the head of his startled Chosen. :Dammit Chris move it!: He snapped as he diverted the Knlir's attacks. :Thirteen years without a peep,: The wolf snarled to himself, :and now out of nowhere...GODS!: He yelped as the Knlir lashed out a secondary head and slammed him into the opposite wall.

"Mngr. Gnnrm, grsmn!" The Knlir screamed as it moved after Chris, who stood frozen with fear.

:Chris!!: Pace whined, as he struggled back onto his feet. :Come on cubling, RUN!!:

"Mon Dieu." Whispered the fourth and forgotten member of the confrontation. Gambit was no coward, but when something the size of an elephant, and kin to some of his worst nightmares, appeared out of thin air, well...

The Knlir moved in for the kill, Chris motionless and seemingly helpless. Yet as they had so many times in his short life, Chris's powers came to his rescue, and he dodged the fanatical strikes of the Knlir.

:Pace?: Chris whimpered through the mindlink, :I.. I can't fight this...:

:You have to!: Pace howled as he threw himself back into the fray, :I can't hurt him!! Only you..: The thought was broken as the Knlir once again redirected it's attention to the Dreamer.

"Mngr. Gnnrm, grsmn!!" The Knlir screamed over Pace's thought. ^YOU WILL DIE!^ It snarled, at Pace. The wolf leapt out away from the monster's range, and growled back.

^Brainless coward, you can't kill me^ Pace laughed viciously. :Although this is gonna hurt like hell tomorrow: ^Wouldn't you like to Dance?^ He snarled at the intruder.

^Godless scum!^ shrieked the Knlir as it lashed out with one of it's snakelike heads, "MGNR!!"

^Don't you wish.^ Pace barked back, as he evaded the blow by a paw-length. :Come on Chris!: He snapped. :I can't keep this up much longer!:

Chris stood watching his one and only soulmate dance in, for Pace, a bloodless battle, for Chris it would be an entirely different fight. :I can't do this.: He pleaded silently towards the heavens. :I can't fight this, somebody... anybody...: As far as Chris was concerned, he was helpless, his power useful only in defense. :There's no way I'm gonna live through this,: he decided a moment later, :and I can't stand here and watch Pace suffer...: Chris took a step towards the nightmare.

:I love you Pace.: He though quietly, and stood motionless as the Knlir accepted the opening and tore him in half.

"Mngr." The Knlir snarled mockingly, and vanished.

:Chris...: Pace limped over to what remained of his Chosen. :No..: He whimpered, trying to convince himself it was all a lie, that his Chosen was still alive. It didn't work.

"Dog?" Gambit asked cautiously, trying to figure out if the large smokey-gray canine was a threat.

:Dog?: Pace responded vacantly, turning to look at the cajun.

"Mayb' not." Gambit reflect as his gaze met the bottomless yellow pools of the wolf's eyes.

Chris's form began to fade softly, the edges blurring as his lifeecho was lost to the storm.

"Kendor soln, kendar kototh." Pace whimpered quietly. "Kendor soln." Then he turned, looked sharply at the X-man and bolted out of the mansion, leaving behind the vanishing body of his Chosen, and a confused cajun who had lost the last few minutes from his memory.

:Sasha?: Pace called into the dark and stormy skies. :Sasha?:

:Pace?: A calm mindvoice answered, :what's the matter?:

:Chris is dead, Sasha.: Pace howled at the storm spattered sky. :I'm alone.: The other mindvoice was silent for a moment.

:You know what you need to do Pace,: Sasha replied quietly.

:No..: Pace shuddered, :I can't.: He looked down at the leaf covered ground. :Don't ask me to.:

Sasha sighed. :I will not Judge, but I cannot tell the others unless...:

:I can't.: Pace replied. :I couldn't ever do this again. I failed him Sasha, if I'd been quicker, if I'd had more time...:

:Kendor soln.: Sasha snapped cutting him off.

:How would you know?: Snarled Pace, :You've never...: but Sasha had broken contact. :lost anyone...: he finished softly. :You made the rules Sasha, but the rules are wrong.:
