I got tired of having the original fiction F'locked, and I didn't want to setup an add-filled LJ (I am NOT enthralled at the idea of paying for more than one account here) so I went ahead and setup a WordPress blog.

I've finally gotten the installation beaten somewhat into shape, so if folks would be willing to take a gander over at www.UnquietBones.com and let me know how the layout looks, I'd be verymuchthankful! ^_^

I've setup the LiveJournal feed for Unquiet Bones over here, but for now I'll continue manually cross-posting to LJ. Once the buts are worked out, I'll switch for good, but I'm still getting into the rhythm of WordPress. Plus all of my social circles are on LJ. *grins at her f'list* ^_^

And now I have to go rework The Unforgotten Country so it's just fanfic... *adds another page of things to her To Do list* Yay. :P

12 prompts a day for 30 days... if there isn't something here to get your Muses going, I give up. ^_~ *grin*

But so far it looks like I'm at least luring a few folks Muses out to play, so I'm calling it a win for the moment. Now I just need to spread the word a bit. *eyes the interwebs* I'm thinking the best way will be to write for comms that allow non-prompt responses, but I'm open for suggestions.

*shamelessly bribes her flist's plotbunnies* Heh ^_^

There were so many things that could go wrong, that she spent every waking hour not thinking about them.

Some days were easier than others; when she was wrapped up in things that were going wrong and there wasn’t time to spare for things that hadn’t. But other days-- long lazy days where nothing much happened at all...

Those days her thumb traced circles on the worry stone, tucked away in a pocket where no one could see, silent prayers to fend off future horrors.

She wore it away in slivers of faith, and smiled, and chatted, and didn't think.

SUMMARY: Written for [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic Culture Clash challenge.

Customs are never just customs, and Atlantis is awash in tradition. Military, Civilian; Hard Science, Soft Science; Russian, Australian, Japanese; Native, Exiles... There are layers over layers, until even the simplest infraction has them snapping and snarling over the breakwaters.

It's Ronon who cuts through the arguments to point out the obvious. There are too many cultures here, too many hidden edges that they stumble into on an almost daily basis. With every thing stretched so tight, so thin, it doesn't take much to send them screaming at each other across tables or benches or gate rooms. The city is deluged in a hundred versions of 'But I didn't do anything!' and it’s tearing them apart.

If they had time for classes, Elizabeth would run them -- guiding everyone through the maze of coral and shale of how close is too close to stand, how often you need to meet someone's eyes, how a gift is a gift is a gift and each one requires a different reply -- but they don’t.

Instead she pulls in the sociologists and anthropologists, and gives them the task of creating a hand signal that means 'please stop; cultural violation.' Only they can’t use something that might be insulting and the number of existing insulting hand signals is awe-inspiring. Still, something is cobbled together that's quick and easy to understand. It’s not ‘talk to the hand’ so much as ‘talk to the heart’ and she puts it into use immediately.

Tempers cool, somewhat, and it’s enough for now. Another patch on a leaking hull, but all they have to do is weather the storms a bit longer. When they have time, she'll fix it.

And later, when Woosley asks in confused tones why people keep flashing him what he's assuming are some sort of gang signs, Elizabeth realizes the patches have become part of the hull.

What if I were a pirate, a solider, a sailor?
What if I was a fox, a bear, a wolf?
What if I could fly?

Because What If always leads to When I Grow Up, and Peter can only play one game.

SUMMARY: Gameshows, color theory, and other cultural idiosyncrasies of the Pegasus Galaxy.

The world is ending, and he's run out of words.

Which isn't his fault, it isn't even half his fault. If Sheppard hadn't used 'grass' and 'seaweed' two turns ago, Rodney would be able to say some version of 'green' without the computer muting him. Then maybe they wouldn't be spending the last hours of their life suffocating in this stupid excuse for an ancient version of hangman.

"Sunsets."

Which isn't a color at all, and it takes Rodney a moment to figure out Teyla's not talking about which buttons to push. Her voice sounds wistful even through the radio's static and he wonders if her cell is as mind-numbingly bland as the one he's stuck in. No color but the four buttons (red, yellow, blue, and black) arrayed on a shelf the same featureless beige as the rest of the room. There's a door with no handle, and five lights over the door; four on, one off; which means there's just this last game to go. He hopes.

He tries to think of something supportive, some word encompassing 'don't give up' and 'we've been through worse' and 'hello, genius here, working on it', but they've already used them up. So he goes back to thinking about turtles, and snakes, and--

"Flying."

They're down to one-word sentences now, no use in wasting what they might need later. They've lost pronouns, names, colors; if they don't win soon they'll be down to grunts and Morse code.

"Dinner."

And now he's reminded of the fact they been in here over sixteen hours, and he is so going to kill Ronon when they get out. His last powerbar had been hours ago, but if he could just figure out how to say 'green'... because the team isn't stupid. They'd figured out the answers, first as a team, then one by one as they ran out of words, deciphering what buttons to push in the ancients' game of 'what comes next'.

They did color theory, then ran the spectrum from ultraviolet to infrared, then played a game of Simon Says that used up enough curse words that Rodney had been reduced to screaming at the console in silent frustration. Every wrong answer reset that level of the game, and if he had to remember one more red-red-blue-black-yellow-blue-blue sequence he was going to start inventing words.

But so far only Rodney has figured out that green follows orange-black-yellow in this version of the game, and it won't let them move on until everyone answers right. It's green, not white or red, because they've moved onto 'colors as numbers' instead of wavelengths or color mixing, and this had to be the stupidest waste of ancient technology he'd ever seen. If they ever got out-- when they got out, he was taking the ZPM and nuking the damned Rainbow Temple into radioactive sludge.

Green, green, green. Mold, mildew, grass, trees, they'd used those on earlier games. Absinthe, Elizabeth May, Ireland, Australia's flag, Dallas Stars' jerseys... words that wouldn't mean anything even if he used them. Even lime, and pine, and apple, and envy would mean nothing to Ronon or Teyla. In Pegasus most apples were red, pine trees were called something he couldn't remember, and the Atlantis mess hadn't bothered to stock limes because they needed him more than a little zest--

Ding!

Someone else had figured it out, finally! If only it was Teyla or Ronon, because maybe there was something Pegasus green they hadn't used yet--

"Kermit!"

Ding! Ding!

Rodney watched the door slide open with a congratulatory chime and counted to fifty (twice) before he stepped into the next room, with its cheerful holographic recording congratulating them on their success. After sixteen hours of synonyms, and euphemisms, and blind flailing, he'd been saved by a Muppet. (More accurately: Movie Night and Lt. Parkers' belief that everyone should see The Muppet Movie at least once.)

Some days it just didn't pay to be a genius.

He talked about his home; the sounds, the smells, the bitter homesickness seeping past his defenses now and then. Now, with a city listening, he’s run out of words to say.

khriskin: (Deep Thoughts)
So I'm sitting here playing around with ideas for the current [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic challenge and I'm running into a problem. Every idea I come up with is basically untenable for any of the main SGA characters to be dealing with canonically.

For instance: There is no logical reason I can think of why GT1 (or even Lorne's GT2) would be babysitting geologists on an lifeless planet with no hint of prior civilization. GT1 is really only meant to handle things requiring a) Rodney, b) Teyla, or c) solving problems requiring a liberal application of John or Ronon. Both GT1 and GT2 have heads of the military in them and thus really would only go out on missions requiring those folks. Otherwise Atlantis runs the risk of having a major attack or disaster happen when the people in charge are all offplanet. (And yes, I know, I'm applying external logic to a show with sometimes shaky internal logic-- so sue me. ^_~)

So I have Imaginary Gate Team 5 (bless their little hearts) and a growing cast of scientific, military, and Pegasus native OCs roaming about in the draft fics taking care of all the odd little side missions that don't have enough clout to warrant anyone important (or that require skillsets the main canon characters just don't have).

They are still stories that I want to write, but I'm no longer sure anyone in fandom really wants to read them.

There was a post by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper linked from [livejournal.com profile] metafandom yesterday that dealt with the topic of OCs (Friendshipper's Guide to Writing Compelling Original Characters in Fanfic) and how to best use them in fanfic. While I understand it's a YMMV (your mileage may very) discussion, I still was rather taken aback by the idea (supported by many in the comments) that OCs in fandom are expected to play only supporting roles.

Now don't get me wrong, I love Teyla and Ronon and John and Rodney and Elizabeth and everyone else in then ensemble. I love reading about them, I love writing about them... but I also love fics set in the Stargate 'verse that are only tangently related to the canon cast. The thing I love best about Stargate is the endless possibilities the universe offers. There are a hundred million stories out there just waiting to be told and a billion more variations on ways to tell them.

And don't even get me started on the fact that infinite parallel universes are actually canon! *grin*

Anywho, fangirling aside, I'm not quite sure where GT5 fits anymore.
While I've gotten some good feedback about GT5's many adventures, I am now worried that posting their stories to the various SGA comms is unwelcome by a majority of the folks reading them.

It's not like I don't point out that they are Imaginary Gate Team 5 fics, but I wonder now how many readers are interested in the overall world and how many are just interested in the canon characters. The last thing I want to do is annoy people (for lo, I am a wuss) so I think I might stop posting them to the comms, and just save GT5 and Co. for this LJ and for Wraithbait.

So, um, yeah...

What say you, oh wolves?

When Atlantis talks, time stops. From one breath to the next Rodney watches the world freeze as she floods down the neural net and overclocks his brain. Sight, sound, movement, all pushed aside in that blast of raw information.

The first few times were terrifying. Just the idea that he could be thinking, processing, so quickly that time mired itself gave him nightmares. Because as fast as he was, Atlantis was faster.

But it was when he stopped being terrified that it really scared him. The day he felt the first wisps of want, stuck in the midst of an engineering problem, bickering with Radek over power regulation, and feeling frustrated-- feeling... slow.

She knew what it did to him, those sudden flashes of something he couldn't be. She knew, and he knew she knew, and she used it ruthlessly. Because there was always another crisis around the corner, another race against impossible odds, and he could never say no.

Not when they all depended on him.

Not yet.

For every time Atlantis survived the rising, there were a hundred universes where she didn't. A hundred empty rooms on the other side of the quantum mirror that wasn’t; an Ancient looking glass into the myriad might-have-beens. But the rooms weren't always empty and more often than not there was another John there, haggard and lean, staring back into that same window of possibilities. He chatted with them some nights, passing back and forth stories that had never happened, but in the end they’d always say their goodbyes and move on, restlessly searching for the city where he wasn't alone.

They joke it's the closest they'll get to dating with regulations back in effect; fraternization rules take on a whole new light inside a floating city in the middle of nowhere. There were discrete questions in that first year when home was a galaxy away and getting farther, but no official policy was ever made. So they just solider on, because no one wants to face being reassigned and leaving home on the wrong side of the gate.

Watching House teach is like watching a badger herd sheep, it works, but it's a unique definition of 'works'.

Wilson leans against the second floor railing, half-empty coffee in hand, looking down on the carnage. Surviving House has become an unofficial badge of honor; for every terrified student, there's another leaning into the questions, fighting for the chance to be 'not quite as stupid as you look' or 'useful for something other than Soylent Green'.

But it's the ones that do neither that Wilson watches, between sips of lukewarm coffee, because surviving House isn't the same as learning from him.

"You," the fictive pointed his cane in the general direction of the Writer, "suck." He waited a moment for a reaction, trying to find the best lounging position on the couch. The suspiciously comfy couch, come to think of it. When the Writer continued to ignore him House poked one of the pillows just to see if was somehow leaking Viocdin. Nope, just cat fur.

"Have I mentioned that you suck? Recently?" Still ignored, he leaned over the back of the couch and poked the Writer with his cane. "Hullo, Earth to Writer: I'm bored, entertain me."

"Last time I checked, entertainment was your job, not mine." The Writer frowned at the computer screen, then set about rearranging the last paragraph of the fic-in-progress. High doses of NyQuil did not make for the most coherent plotting.

"Diagnostician, actually. Not my fault you find me entertaining." He settled back into the comfy couch and glared over at the cat who had settled herself in on the far arm and was glaring back. "Shoo furball."

:No.:

"You have a telepathic cat?" He raised an eyebrow and the cat yawned. "Quaint."

"She's not a cat, she's an Avatar," the Writer scanned the next scene and wondered why on earth she had ever thought that putting Rodney in any position of power was a good idea. Next time he swung by to bitch (and drink all the coffee), they'd have to talk. Or more accurately, she'd talk and he'd ignore her. Again. She decided to work Radek into the scene to annoy him.

"An Avatar of what?"

"My cat."

There was a long pause as the fictive attempted to follow the circular logic. "You do realize that makes no sense."

"Welcome to my world." The Writer paused to transplant an inquisitive PlotBunny from the computer desk back onto the floor. It hopped off in search of more hospitable climes, heading back under the bed to hang with the rest of the warren. "Now are you going to do something useful or just co-opt my couch?"

"You aren't using it."

"Yeah, but the vampire, two immortals, and one increasingly grumpy theoretical physicist are. So either find something useful to do, or I'm dumping you in a crossover."

"With a theoretical physicist?"

"With the vampire."

"I think OSHA has laws against that."

"You're a fictive, OSHA is probably more worried about my mental health at this point. Besides, I'm beginning to think you and Spike deserve each other." She shoed yet another PlotBunny off the computer desk. It promptly collided with another bun and there was a short violent battle of the fandoms. The Writer grabbed the pale blue Who!bun by the scruff and glared down at the neon pink Highlander!bun (who didn't look at all sorry about the whole affair).

House wondered if the couch was hallucinogenic. "Just what kind of Writer are you?"

"Busy." She skritched the Who!bun who happily sprawled in her lap and made faces at the Highlander!bun. "Now why don't you wander off to SubReality like a good little fictive and let me work." There was a pause. "They serve alcohol."

"Ah."

"And if you hit it during MarySue hour, there'll be a whole herd of empathic healers falling all over themselves to take away your pain." She tossed him the keys to the fictive!Harley. "Just don't bring them home, k? I have enough of those hanging around the house as it is."

:I am not a MarySue.:

"No, you're the telepathic companion animal, which makes me the MarySue. Now scat, and try not to get House into too much trouble." The Writer refocused on the fic-in-progress, absently skritching the PlotBunny.

"I'm taking the cat to a bar?"

"Nope, she's taking you. And if anyone asks, you've never met the bunny slippers."

House decided a) he really didn't want to know, and b) he could use a drink. So he sighed, levered himself off the couch and gave the cat a measuring look. "After you?"

:Always.:

It wasn't that she didn't miss Atlantis, she did, but she missed it the way she missed Grand Forks, and Pope, and Andrews. A wistful ache for things gone by, nothing more. The spiraling towers and alien seas were no more home than the asphalt and concrete airbases of her past assignments.

It wasn't Atlantis keeping her from taking the post at Misawa, or McGuire, or accepting the promotion that would have put her behind a desk instead of a mechanic's toolkit. It wasn't the city that kept her circling the SGC with 'just in case' and 'what if', waiting for the day they needed her again.

Because the city was just a symbol; home was where your family was, and they'd scattered her family to the four winds. So she circled, because the gate was here, and John was here, and all he had to do was say the word and she'd have her home again.
