"You aren't fooling anyone," the Dark Lord gazed over the rim of his glass, red eyes glinting in the firelight. The chessboard beside him lay half-empty, the remaining pieces scattered.

"I didn't think I was." Snape stepped over Nagini's coils to take the chair opposite Voldemort. "But then, I don't need to, do I?" Snape moved another rook and two pawns off the board. "I told you not to underestimate him."

Voldemort snarled at the chessboard, hands clenching, then abruptly laughed, tipping his glass. "To my Grey Knight, bearer of bad tidings."

"Not yours."

"But not his?" Voldemort smiled.

"No."

SUMMARY: Somewhere they've gone from youthful innocence to willful ignorance...

Some things only made sense on the far side of the wardrobe. Always winter, never Christmas? They blamed the Witch and never blinked an eye. But always spring and never Easter? Susan never saw the parallels until she stepped back through the furs. Then it was obvious, insultingly so. He'd mocked their faith and held them blind to it. Only the stag, the voiceless stag who wasn't one of them, had finally set them free.

Just a game of masks and lies, the same they'd played in ages past. If only she could make them see...

But they never did.

"You won't get away with this." Snape gave his opponent his best glare, one honed from years of challenging students and Death Eaters alike. The gaze was cold, condescending... and completely ineffective. After a moment the potions master gave up and took the chair across the fire from his usual spot. His foe yawned and snuggled into the cushions, purring a victory tune.

"Only you would think practicing animagus transformations included napping." Snape glared at his new teaching assistant, "couldn't you pick something less—- theatrical?"

The tiger just sprawled bonelessly over Snape's favorite couch in the teacher's lounge and purred.

(Note: I just found out tigers can't purr --I had thought they were the only big cats that could-- so just assume that since it's a magical tiger it is therefore allowed to purr. ^_~ *grin*)

"You never asked me why."

Snape looked up from his book, but Lupin was still staring into the fireplace. "Is that a question?" He waited until the werewolf gave in and nodded faintly. "I didn't ask because I didn't want to know," Snape snorted. "And I still don't."

"Why?" Lupin prodded the fire with the poker, sending sparks dancing like memories.

"Because I think I know the answer." Now Remus looked at him. "You saved me because you couldn't save Harry." And there was the confirmation he hadn't wanted to see. With a sigh Snape went back to his book.

One plus one was two, except that Harry kept adding and subtracting until Luna wasn't sure if she was three or four or a lost letter wandering in the sea of numbers. Hermione plus Cormac was zero. Harry plus Hermione was three (because Ron was always there, even when he wasn't). People math; dancing, spinning numbers that never quite added up. But she almost understood...

So she followed him, counting. Then it was Snape plus Harry and the numbers ran into infinity and back in furious calculation. Fearless, she jumped into the tide, breakwaters between the waves.

"I don't think..."

CHALLENGE: [livejournal.com profile] snape100 #144: Mystery Character Draw - Fleur Delacour

"You are immune." When Snape merely raised an eyebrow Fleur's glare got colder, which he had assumed was physically impossible prior to the drop. "How is this so?" She reminded him of a small lapdog, furious at being overlooked. "No one has given me this 'pfft!'" she waved a dismissive hand. "Tell me what magic is this."

For a moment Snape pondered telling her the truth, that Veela heritage only did so much; merely enhanced existing emotion not created it whole cloth. Instead he simply sniffed derisively, muttering something sarcastic about the power of buttons.

Who knew she'd believe him?

"You're incompetent."

"You're a git."

"M'row," Mrs Norris interrupted the two with an annoyed rowl, "mrr, yow." With that the cat stalked off into the darkness, leaving Snape and Filch to follow after, bickering.

"You haven't found Potter either." Filch snapped back in a hushed whisper. "Don't see where you get off telling me how to do my job--"

"Well if you did your job--" Snape snarled.

"M'row, mrrr, rouw." The cat-shaped shadow added her own whispered commentary to the mix, ignoring the fact no one else spoke cat. Snape decided to take it as an insult regardless.

For one dreadful moment Severus thought Albus had finally gone mad. "You--"

"Think he is doing quite well." Dumbledore nodded, whilst helping himself to another lemondrop. "Don't you?"

"Letting students loose in the halls with a basilisk is not anywhere on my list of 'quite well'." Snape growled. "Potter's too important to risk like this."

"Filch is doing exactly what was asked of him Severus." Albus sighed. "You shouldn't underestimate him. Filch or Potter." He paused, "or Mrs Norris, of course."

Snape looked unimpressed.

"Appearances aren't everything." Dumbledore gave him a bemused smile then waved him towards the door.

"You could have stopped them."

"Could I?" Lupin didn't look away from the picture of the Marauders, just ran his fingers over the glass of the display case. "Well yes, I could have tried." Turning he gave Snape an apologetic look. "I could have killed you."

"You're hardly the only one with that distinction." The Slytherin headmaster sniffed, trying to bait his rival into old habits, disturbed by the layer of resigned guilt.

"I'm sorry."

Snape gave him a scathing look. "You would be." He paused for a moment, expecting a response, then snorted. "You make a pathetic werewolf."

"Thanks."

They passed, years later, on a rain-swept evening in the ruins of Diagon Alley. She would have missed him, save for the sharp gasp and startled look. And with that, everything she'd fought so hard to forget came crashing down, drowning her in shattered fragments of memory. It took her an hour, this time, to claw her way back to sanity, away from hallucinations of a war they hadn't won and a life she'd never lead.

And in her dreams he held her, talked her through the nightmares.

She curled fetal in the pooling rain, alone, crying for lost dreams.

No, no, no, but he couldn't stop it, and Sirius was there, and Harry, and no, please, and then it was too late and what he was melted into the darkness of what he had become.

The moon was full...

After a while the world outside the mountain seemed less real, less immediate, more of a waking dream than life. There were no Goa'uld, no Ori, no End of the World every other day, just memories of what you used to believe.

And you can't remember when it stopped being home.

It was always a bad sign when Rodney was giggling. Most of Atlantis was smart enough to avoid him those days when he seemed more a five year-old with a stash of new toys than a scientist. Teyla had learned not to ask 'Yes, but what does it do?' and Ronon had learned not to sit still long enough for Rodney to find him and use him as a guinea pig again.

And John? John learned 'Here, hold this.' never ended well, and that the Ancients should have used warning labels referring explicitly to use by over-exuberant scientists... or Rodney.

It had taken him a week the first time, just to get up the courage to move off the safety of the boulder. It wasn't that he was naturally a coward, but when you've been abandoned in the Fire Swamps, it tends to give you a new perspective on life. Most of that perspective has to do with not wanting to be charbroiled or gnawed upon by overly large rodents, but that was understandable. It took him a week, but in that week he’d learned the rhythms that surrounded him. Three years later, it would only take him an hour.

SUMMARY: In the real world, everyone dies.

In the real world, everyone dies.

It's only in stories that they get out just in the nick of time. That the heroes live to fight another day. That evil is vanquished and light restored. In stories...

He wandered in between the pages, pen in hand. Touching here and there in swift kind strokes to save those he could. A flickering ghost, nothing more than shadows, he walked the halls of Hogwarts. Small things, little things. A letter that she meant to send, the intonation of a name, the subtle sense of something wrong that moved them from the path of chaos. He never touched the mains, their paths were set in deep jagged marks he could not change. Sometimes he could soften, gentle the blows that plot and prose rained down, but never enough.

So he saved those he could. Bit parts, bit players, the people-shaped shadows that wandered the halls, briefly mentioned in passing. They sharpened as he looked at them, spun up from nothing into people full of life, and love, and history uniquely vibrant in a way they had never been before. Not that it showed, the words were same, if anyone noticed the faceless crowd was no longer faceless they never said.

It's why he hadn't realized before, what he did in passing. Flying through the pages, twining through the story, oblivious as it pulled life from his silent step. As the pages turned they grew brighter, stronger, and still he never would have known. Until the war.

They had been nameless, faceless, shadows in a war of light and darkness. They were born to die and fell as they had been written. To wand, and fang, and dementors' kiss, and all the evils that the page was heir to.

And when they died he felt it.

In the real world everybody dies, but he wouldn't let it happen here. Not again.

A shadow flickers through the halls of Hogwarts and somehow the darkness isn't quite as deep. Somehow the light isn't quite as bright. Somehow everything is a little less real. In stories...
