The TARDIS learned to translate concepts, not words, because English was a strange little language...

"It's a bit of a dress," Rose eyed her companions with something akin to pity, "you know, the flowing bit everyone steps on unless it's carried by small children."

"Not even close," Jack grinned. "It's engines and freight cars, whistles and smoke-- unless you've gone electric, but what's the fun in that?"

"It's the light of a wishing star, the entropic death of comets." The Doctor was brooding again.

So she threw a pillow at him... and their foray into linguistic scrabble devolved from there.

Time drips from my fingers, like rain, like names, like blood; bleeding away a self shed in desperation. Rose. Just a shell, a skin, a face like any other, even if it's new. It's still me, underneath; just look, you'll see. Can't you see? Like snow and rain, and hail, and mist; all water, nothing more.

But that's the catch, isn't it? I'm never sure which one I'll be; mist or hail, storms or sea. I know what I've been, and I've been so many things Rose, but I can't tell you who I am, not yet.

But I'm me...

He hoped the TARDIS might have mistranslated. "Riding you say?"

His Companion nodded happily.

"On... horses?" Which was a tad redundant since they were standing outside a stable, but really now, there were countless more interesting ways to die. Perhaps she had meant elephants or cephalopods or something with a little less speed and a little more brains. Which made him wonder if somewhere (or somewhen) they might have gotten around to breeding riding sheep, because if you were looking for a right dearth of brains they'd give horses a run for their money. Racing sheep, now there's a thought...

He could never find the words to explain, eventually he stopped trying. Humans had too rigid a grasp of time, confined to sailing across the oceans he swam in. Time was only linear as he lived it; a scattered handful of breaching leaps into existence as they knew it. The past, the future, none of it more substantial than the memories he took away. But they clung to the surface, even Jack, stubbornly demanding to see the horizon. Where are we going? Where have we been? If he could only make them see... it was all just waves and water.

"Did you know you can taste time?" The Doctor raised his glass, peering curiously at the merlot. He grinned when Rose raised an eyebrow. "Well, not taste, not exactly, more of a smell come to think of it."

"And that's a royal 'you' to boot." Jack tipped his half-empty glass in salute, "Some of us make do with only five senses you know." Rose laughed and leaned over to clink glasses in human comradery.

"You aren't missing much," the Doctor sniffed the wine experimentally. "Smells like Siberia, time does, full of ice and snow and barren nothingness."

"Good to know."

Outside the TARDIS lay a tumbling horizon of ice and rock, stars obscured by toxic mist spun from sunlit surfaces. The only sounds the pops and hissing moans as the ground beneath fell prey to warmth. If he'd a Companion, they'd have said something suitably human, but he was between Companions and had to fill the silence himself.

Instead he gazed out into the hazy sky. It was whimsy more than anything that brought him here, an impulsive desire to thwart the universe's expectations, however minor. So when all the world looked up at Halley's Comet, the Doctor looked down.

And that was the problem, wasn't it? It couldn't hurt, not the way she meant. A simple ritual of masks and candy, wrapped up in something bigger, something older than a turnip with a face. But it was Rose, and it was Halloween, and what the hell.

He took one last look in the mirror and frowned, striped pants, frocked coat, cricket ball... "Ah!" The celery. Wouldn't do to forget the celery.

"Welcome aboard!" So he did, but it had been a long time since he'd been on a ship where the stars to steer her by were only that and not his destination. "Steady there-," and he didn't quite trip over the pile of bags lying innocently in the middle of the deck, but it earned him an annoyed look from Jack none the less. Jack, who'd taken in stride the shift from traveling through time and space to just space, and linear space at that.

He forgot they were human sometimes, and on the good days they forgot he wasn't.

Jack sang something old and improper and spun her around in the starlight to half-remembered tunes. The Doctor laughed at Jack's blatantly improvised lyrics and Rose's conflicting accompaniment where she'd learned different words. So they drew him in with 'So you can do better?' and the three of them played a game of Horse, with songs instead of baskets, till the moonlight faded into the dawn and they were all slightly punch-drunk for lack of sleep. And the TARDIS lured them back with songs soaked in time, a gentle lullaby of forever that danced them all to bed, still laughing.

The Companions always asked 'how much further' when really they meant 'how much longer.' He'd always tell them 'not far' because it wasn't ever, not in the grand scheme of things. Even for lives so short and bright, it was never far. And then one time it was. The difference between 'not far' and 'too far' boiled down to seconds and lives, and he'd guessed wrong.

Now when they asked him he told them he didn't know; it would take as long as it took. They might look at him oddly, but always shrugged it off as just another eccentricity.

It wasn't that he hated the sea, or sailing, it was the sense of timelessness; afloat on a blue horizon with no way to tell how fast or how far he'd traveled. In a more modern age he'd tap the nav computer, hack its programming so that shore leave would come sooner rather than later. But in a more modern age, he wouldn't have been pressed to the Queen’s service to start with. Not that he was bad at it, this sailoring bit, and he toyed with some piratical ideas, but time weighed heavy and he was itching to run.

There were bunnies.

It was an echo, nothing more. A simple memory that refused to die, to fade away into the streams of time that rippled in his wake. He saw her from the corner of his eye, smiling as he worked deep inside the TARDIS fixing glitches. He ignored her, ignored the grief that circled like moonlight in endless orbit around them both.

He figured it out one night, why she was still there, echoing. Somehow she'd stepped too close, blended too well; there was no longer a line where Rose ended and the TARDIS began.

The next time, he smiled back.

He watched them learn to fly in awkward leaps and bounds across the centuries. For every one that made it off the ground, a thousand others fell and yet they kept going. Kept driving forwards into the blue. It was obsessive, this urge to soar where nature had never intended them to go, yet they kept moving closer. One inch at a time. It was that drive, that unbounded will to do the impossible that kept him coming back. The universe was vast, and time unending, but if they could learn to fly, what else would they learn to do?

Everyone dies, Rose, everyone dies. Even Doctors, when the time is right. The future is never settled, never static, and I can only see so far.

I told you, didn’t I? Time Lords don’t control time, no more than sailors control the sea; we’re both carried along by currents we can’t master.

I never said I was a god, Rose. It’s still just a life, no matter how you live it, sideways or backwards it’s all the same. We’ve ridden out the storms before, but happy endings are never guaranteed, and no one can promise you anything. Not even Doctors.

Sometimes they said no.

It happened more often in the beginning, when he was less polished in his roles. When the invitations had seemed less whimsical, and more complex. His words held more weight back then, until he'd learned to lessen the overtones of time and age that leached like water through sand. He was the ocean, deep and dark and dangerous, and they left him on the shore. In time he learned to hide it, bury his self in the depths of the sea, and when he asked them now, "Would you like to come along?"

She said yes.
